Guide To Quickly Arranging Lead Sheets | Piano With Willie | Learn The Piano | Piano Lessons In this month’s article, I am going to talk about different techniques you can use to quickly create an arrangement from a lead sheet. Lead sheets, sometimes referred to “Lead Lines” are when you are presented with only the chords and melody of a song. If you know how to create an arrangement using lead sheets, you have thousands of songs at your fingertips. Now, you probably already know that in order to create an arrangement from a lead sheet, you must know your chords. Video Lesson: Can’t see the video? Step 1 – Finding & Playing The Roots The first step in preparing our arrangement is to start with only the roots of the chords. Every chord symbol has (2) parts: 1) the root and 2) the symbol. Let’s take a look at the first four measures of the song to see how we can apply this technique. By playing only the roots of the chord, we are creating a simple arrangement that will work, but it is not very full. Step 2 – Root-7, Root-3 Chords Step 3 – Adding Motion Step 4 -Improvisation

Audit your Soundscape | Shawn Feeney You may spend a lot of time considering the look of your belongings and environments, but have you considered how they sound? During the bulk of your day, are you hearing printers, cars, and barking dogs, or water, music, and birds? Taking a few moments to audit your soundscape can improve your sonic nutrition, just as interior decorating can improve your visual environment. When I lived in Brooklyn, the trucks below my window were so loud I had to wear earplugs to sleep. Try this exercise in each environment where you spend a significant amount of time each day (workplace, bedroom, kitchen, etc). What do you hear? A spectrogram app (like Spectrum Pro and SpectrumView) for your mobile device can help you visually identify sounds in your environment, and pinpoint their frequencies. You may notice sounds that had previously evaded your conscious attention. How can you change or remove the sound sources the negatively impact you?

Actual Proof: Driftin' Welcome to the blog post about one of Herbie’s most swinging tunes. “Drifitin'" is the sixth track on his 1962 album Takin’ Off. This was Herbie’s first record as a leader. The album also features Dexter Gordon on tenor saxophone, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet/flugelhorn, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The album contains all original Herbie tunes. The group plays an arrangement of the tune that follows obvious patterns from jazz of this era. Dexter takes the first solo and plays one chorus. Herbie executes a particularly fast phrase in this first chorus. Here it is. Herbie almost certainly used two hands to play it. Numbers on the top would be for the right hand and numbers on the bottom would be for the left hand. Now, Herbie likes to play patterns, especially when he plays something complex. That said, over this C7 chord Herbie probably thought two diminished seventh chords (C# and G) with a chromatic lower neighbor tone. The entire pattern would repeat once.

Stomp Box Basics: How 10 Essential Effect Pedals Work Ever since Jimi Hendrix conjured up “Purple Haze” with an octave pedal, a distortion box and his wiry imagination – and made one of the most eloquent anti-war statements with the pure sonics of “Machine Gun” – electric guitars and effects pedals have been kissin’ cousins. If you’re new to the world of effects or if you stepped away for a few years of the post-Y2K boutique pedal revolution, the available array of tone-coloring and tone-bending devices can be overwhelming. Some shops that cater to creative guitarists have cases stocked with literally hundreds of brightly colored boxes, all begging for a place on players’ pedal boards. But cutting through the maze of candy-colored stomp boxes is a direct path that can take you to a place where the sounds on most classic and not-so-classic recordings can be duplicated or approximated. And the stepping-stones of that path are the 10 essential pedal functions that comprise the fundamental tone-tweaking tools. Tuner Distortion Tremolo Wah-Wah Chorus

Transcriptions Welcome to Scooby-Sax! The Website of Jeff Rzepiela This page contains jazz saxophone and flute solo transcriptions by numerous jazz masters. I view transcription of jazz solos to be an essential part of learning how to improvise. Learning the language of jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Phil Woods, etc. develops a vocabulary for use during your own improvisations. Solos are transposed for convenience for C, Bb, and Eb instruments. I was asked by a member of the Phil Woods website about my transcription methods. Transcriptions are always available for free on my website. Jazz Appreciation Month What is Jazz Appreciation Month? Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as "JAM") was created right here at the museum in 2002 to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz - to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more. Jazz Appreciation Month 2016: Benny Carter and Democracy This year, for JAM 2016, we are exploring how jazz itself is a form of democracy – as a form of communication, as a solo or group, and as an equalizer – and celebrating the legacy of musician and bandleader, Benny Carter, who is featured on the JAM poster this year. Benny Carter and Democracy Learn more about this year’s featured musician, find teacher resources, and explore the role of democracy in his work.
