Parents Occupy School to Prevent its Closure On Friday afternoon, parents of students from the Brian Piccolo Specialty School on Chicago’s West Side tried to meet with Mayor Rahm Emanuel. After they were rebuffed at City Hall, they went to the school and nearly 30 of them staged a sit-in demanding a meeting with the mayor and Chicago Public Schools’ Board of Education. Their school is one of ten the board will vote to “turn around” on Wednesday. The controversial program fires the entire staff of a so-called failing school and replaces it with new teachers, and often management is handed over to a charter school system. These particular schools will be managed by Academy for Urban School Leadership.

Five Worst People of the One Percent In November, Care2 joined a dozen other organizations to partner with Brave New Foundation in order to educate the public on the One Percent. Occupy Wall Street and its variations around the world changed the country’s debate from deficits to income inequality. It started to highlight the difficulties of the 99 percent, but left the people benefiting from wrecking the economy unknown. The project aimed to educate the public and voters helped narrow it down to the five worst people in the one percent. The first installment comes in five parts and are only a minute long but the facts speak for themselves. Record 11% Unemployment in the Euro Zone Unemployment in the 17-nation eurozone is at a record high 11.0% for the second month in a row, according to statistics from the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg. Spain, where the government is seeking to contain a banking crisis, has the highest rate, at 24.3%, similar to that in the US during the Great Depression. In Greece, where the economic crisis has turned into a political one with new elections scheduled for June 17, the unemployment rate is up to 21.7% from 15.2% in the year through February; youth unemployment is at around 51%. In France, the jobless rate rose to 10.2% from 10.1%, with Italy reporting the same increase. Portugal reported a rise from 15.2% up from 15.1%. This is indeed gloomy news coupled with the sluggish job growth in the US where unemployment is up to 8.2%.
