Psychadellivision by ~Volcanic-Penguin on deviantART - StumbleUpon Cannabis and Schizophrenia Courtesy of The Joint Blog Contrary to prohibitionist propaganda, a new government-funded study published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology has found that cannabis may combat the symptoms of schizophrenia by stimulating the body’s cannabinoid receptors. Researchers for the study examined rats with schizophrenia which were dosed with a chemical substance meant to mimic cannabinoids – compounds found in cannabis, as well as naturally produced in our body. Researchers found that the cannabinoids “reversed social withdrawal in PCP-treated rats via stimulation of CB1 receptors”; social withdrawal is one of the primary symptoms of schizophrenia. The study – which was funded by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health -concludes that “these findings indicate that.. activation of CB1 receptors is crucial for social interaction, and that PCP-induced social withdrawal results from deficient endocannabinoid transmission”. Marijuana and Mental Health Smoking marijuana alters our response to negative images or emotionsPeople with THC in bloodstream, the active ingredient of cannabis, were less accurate at matching fearful expressions than ones that were happyStudy argues that marijuana may now be touted as a cure for depression By Victoria Woollaston Published: 16:46 GMT, 22 August 2013 | Updated: 16:46 GMT, 22 August 2013 It's well-known that marijuana will get you high, but a lesser known side-effect is that it can alter our response to negative emotions and images. A recent study has taken a look at the brain’s functioning in the presence of tetrahydrocannabinoid (THC) to understand how marijuana can affect the way we process emotions. THC is the principal psychoactive constituent of the cannabis plant. The research tested a group of men who were active users of marijuana. The European Neuropsychopharmacology journal has published a study that has confirmed the positive effect of THC to negative stimuli.
