When Social Media Is Really Problematic for Adolescents Dr. Ana Radovic, an assistant professor of pediatrics at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, an adolescent medicine specialist who does research in mental health services, said that only about a third of teenagers with depression get treatment, and it can take a long time. At a clinic that serves teenagers who are severely depressed or suicidal, she began doing interviews about how they were using social media, and found she was hearing both positive and negative stories. “For example, there was one teen who shared with me that she enjoyed following a band that she liked on Instagram, and it made her feel better,” Dr. Radovic said. “And then all of a sudden she saw a picture of the band member self-harming and cutting her arm.”

1. What is stress and what causes it? Stress generally refers to two things: the psychological perception of pressure, on the one hand, and the body's response to it, on the other, which involves multiple systems, from metabolism to muscles to memory. Some stress is necessary for all living systems; it is the means by which they encounter and respond to the challenges and uncertainties of existence. The perception of danger sets off an automatic response system, known as the fight-or-flight response, that, activated through hormonal signals, prepares an animal to meet a threat or to flee from it. A stressful event—whether an external phenomenon like the sudden appearance of a snake on the path or an internal response, such as fear of losing one's job when the boss yells—triggers a cascade of hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, that surge through the entire body.

The Big Read: Dangers lurk in youth's chase for social media 'likes' SINGAPORE: Eight hours on TikTok, seven hours on Instagram, and two hours on YouTube. This is a snapshot of a day in the life of 21-year-old full-time model Lukas Koshy, who has been losing sleep since he got sucked into the latest social media craze, TikTok, a video-sharing app filled with 15-second lip-syncing videos, memes, and all things amusing to a Generation Z’er like him. Five hours of sleep is all that he is mostly getting these days. “It’s unhealthy,” the Singaporean admits, but he doesn’t see a need to change his ways. How Women Can Relieve Their Stress It seems to be "common knowledge" that women are generally busier and more stressed than men. It's widely believed that they juggle more roles and are constantly rushing. Many women themselves feel that they shoulder the lion's share of responsibilities outside of paid work, even when they are working just as many hours as their male counterparts. Youth suicide: Asian teens crack under growing family pressure SINGAPORE -- Every year, clinical psychologist Carol Balhetchet sees numerous patients in their teens or early 20s come through her Singapore office. Many suffer from depression, anorexia and other conditions; some have attempted suicide before consulting her. Balhetchet's more than 20 years of experience have taught her that most cases stem from stress, and she thinks this factor is even more acute for today's young generations than it was in the past. "There's academic stress, achievement stress, future job stress, and even [choosing] which university they go to is stressful," she said.

3. Singapore ranks 32 out of 40 in new index on work-life balance, Business News SINGAPORE - Singapore is in the bottom quarter of 40 cities when it comes to work-life balance, according to a new study released on Wednesday (Aug 7). It comes in 32nd place, though it is ranked higher than the other three Asian cities considered - Hong Kong, Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur. This is in part due to the large amount of time that people here dedicate to their jobs.

MOE, MSF ‘very concerned’ about spike in youth suicides; experts say more support and awareness necessary SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) are “very concerned” about the spike in the number of youth suicides this year, said the ministries in a joint statement. “It is not yet a trend, but we must monitor this closely and take various measures to address it,” said spokespersons for the ministries in response to email queries from CNA. The number of suicides in Singapore rose 10 per cent last year, with suicides among boys aged 10 to 19 at a record high, the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) said last week. A total of 94 people aged between 10 and 29 killed themselves last year, SOS said.
