DAILY INSPIRATION on Spiritual Growth Quantum Approaches to Consciousness 1. Introduction The problem of how mind and matter are related to each other has many facets, and it can be approached from many different starting points. Of course, the historically leading disciplines in this respect are philosophy and psychology, which were later joined by behavioral science, cognitive science and neuroscience. In addition, the physics of complex systems and quantum physics have played stimulating roles in the discussion from their beginnings. As regards the issue of complexity, this is quite evident: the brain is one of the most complex systems we know. The original motivation in the early 20th century for relating quantum theory to consciousness was essentially philosophical. Quantum theory introduced an element of randomness standing out against the previous deterministic worldview, in which randomness, if it occurred at all, simply indicated our ignorance of a more detailed description (as in statistical physics). 2. The Heart of Spirituality Creepy, Crusty, Crumbling: Illegal Tour of Abandoned Six Flags New Orleans ... Hurricane Katrina killed this clown. According to the photographer, “An abandoned Six Flags amusement park, someone spray painted ‘Six Flags 2012 coming soon’ on the wall above the downed head. But they were clownin.’ Six Flags will never rebuild here.” That’s sad, but much of New Orleans has not been restored to her former glory. Welcome to Zombie Land kids! Chained dreams of fun at Six Flags New Orleans, abandoned Jazzland – that’s what Six Flags opened as “Jazzland” in 2000. Some photographers can see past the lifeless amusement park’s decay and desolation, showing us that there is still a chance the place could be cheery and not cheerless. Like a Bad Dream. Just in case you don’t know the scoop on what Hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans and Six Flags, this photo is of New Orleans, LA, on Sept. 14, 2005. Once upon a time, Six Flags was filled with children’s laughter – but now it’s sad, silent, and surreal. No lines for dead rides. Watch out for that tree! No one wants a ride?

Freemasonry @ Aleister Crowley Texts An Excerpt on the Reconstituted O.T.O. from his Confessions What follows is Crowley's own account of his motivations and methods in reconstructing the O.T.O. and its rituals. It is excerpted from The Confessions of Aleister Crowley, pp. 700-n-704. In this excerpt Crowley discusses his revision of the "Oasis" initiation rituals of O°-n-III°. His explanatory introduction to these revised rituals, as presented to then-Frater Superior Merlin Peregrinus X° when the reforms were proposed, appears elsewhere in this issue.--H.B. "WHAT IS FREEMASONRY?" The question then arose, "What truths should be communicated and by what means promulgated?" Another essential point was to reduce the unwieldly mass of material to a compact and coherent system. The O.H.O. put the rituals of this Order at my disposal. The main objects of the instruction were two. It chooses to enter into relations with the solar system. Finally, the cycle is closed by the reabsorption of all individuality into infinity. {...}

Cry, Wolf The following article first appeared in Earth Island Journal. How a Campaign of Fear and Intimidation Led to the Gray Wolf's Removal from the Endangered Species List "Nabeki" didn't expect everyone to love her when, in September 2009, she founded the website "Howling for Justice" to celebrate the return of gray wolves to the Northern Rocky Mountains and to protest the then-pending wolf hunts in Montana and Idaho. She didn't expect to fear for her life, either. But after she posted the names of Montana wolf hunters on her site, the threats began. On a single day in February 2010 the anti-wolf movement sent to her 3,000 messages. "Until that day I wasn't thinking about the hatred," Nabeki, a professional from California who moved to the Rockies 15 years ago, told me. For the last few years, a new version of an old war against the American gray wolf has raged in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. But to many in the region, the resurgence of wolves became a source of rage.

Zen is Boring - isn't it? - Buddha's world Let's face it. Zen is boring. You couldn't find a duller, more tedious practice than Zazen. The philosophy is dry and unexciting. Joshu Sasaki, a Zen teacher from the Rinzai Sect, once said that Buddhist teachers always try to make students long for the Buddha World, but that if the students knew how really dry and tasteless the Buddha World actually was, they'd never want to go. Boredom is important. People hate their ordinary lives. Your life will change. People long for big thrills. You need a teacher like that. Boredom is what you need. Some years ago some psychologists did a study in which they sat some Buddhists monks and some regular folks in a room and wired them up to EEG machines to record their brain activity. If you really take a look at your ordinary boring life, you'll discover something truly wonderful. The life you're living right now has joys even God will never know.
