Study: Ages of social network users
Posted in Tech blog on February 16th, 2010 by Pingdom UPDATE: There is a more recent post available, Social network demographics in 2012. How old is the average Twitter or Facebook user? What about all the other social network sites, like MySpace, LinkedIn, and so on? How is age distributed across the millions and millions of social network users out there? To find out, we pulled together age statistics for 19 different social network sites, and crunched the numbers. Full list of sites in this study: Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter, Slashdot, Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, FriendFeed, Last.fm, Friendster, LiveJournal, Hi5, Tagged, Ning, Xanga, Classmates.com, Bebo. To get consistent age data for the various sites we used site demographics information for the United States gathered from Google’s Ad Planner service and then did some additional calculations to get all the data we needed. Social network age distribution What is the age distribution in the social media sphere?

The four best ways to track traffic to your favorite websites With the decline of Digg now a well-worn story, you may wonder how writers and reporters keep careful tabs on just how large a website is (in terms of traffic), and in what direction their numbers are heading. It’s not magic, and the tools that most people use are public and free. There are two classes of services that are useful: trackers that give estimates, and those that only give relative size of websites. Both have their purposes and uses. Do note however, that nearly always you are going to be looking at traffic estimates, meaning that you always need to take the numbers with several grains of salt. Compete Perhaps the best known traffic estimation shop online, Compete has a single weakness: it only tracks US traffic. That said, Compete has clear, easy to read graphs, and will serve you a full year of traffic for up to three websites at a time. Alexa Alexa is the granddaddy of traffic tracking. Twitter: Now more than 1 billion tweets per month | Royal Pingdo Posted in Tech blog on February 10th, 2010 by Pingdom Over the past few months there has been plenty of speculation around the Web that Twitter’s growth has stalled, but if we look at activity on Twitter in terms of the number of tweets, this is far from the truth. According to our research, Twitter is as of December processing more than one billion tweets per month. This increase in activity is also in line with a statement that Evan Williams, CEO of Twitter, made on January 12: Across all metrics that matter, yesterday was Twitter’s highest-usage day ever. Visualizing the growing use of Twitter To visualize the increase in Twitter activity over time, we have created a chart that shows the number of tweets per month back to mid 2008. Viewing this, it becomes very clear that not only was 2009 the year that Twitter’s popularity really exploded, it also shows that Twitter usage is still increasing rapidly. Some interesting observations: Future growth

80% of Children Under Age 5 Use the Internet Weekly « Upstate Social Media Image via Wikipedia Report Nearly 80% of children between the ages of 0 and 5 who use the Internet in the United States, do so on at least a weekly basis, according to a report released Monday from education non-profit organizations Joan Ganz Cooney Center and Sesame Workshop. The report, which was assembled using data from seven recent studies, indicates that young children are increasingly consuming all types of digital media, in many cases consuming more than one type at once. Television use dwarfs internet use in both the number of children who surf the web and the amount of time they spend on it. Heavy television viewing may even be partially responsible for the rising number of children who use the Internet. Internet and television use among children has become entwined in other ways as well. The report doesn’t attempt to solve the more-than-decade-old debate of whether all of this screen time is good for children. Read Article Here. Like this: Like Loading...

Kids and New Media: Generation Social? Facebook created quite a stir a couple of weeks ago when Mark Zuckerberg alluded to the possibility of making the popular social media site available to kids younger than 13 years old, the (theoretical) existing minimum age to open an account. In fact, it’s estimated that over 7.5 million children under 13 years old lied about their age in order to be able to sign up and create a Facebook account. Surprising? Not really, specially when reading the latest report from Ipsos on Kids and Social Media. The study took a look at how kids and parents adopt and adapt to new media and technologies, and it’s not surprising to see how fast kids are catching on to internet-enabled devices – not surprising, that is, if you are like me and have kids in that age range! In the households surveyed, 42% of kids age 6-12 are said to have used those devices to visit a social network site, and 71% of those kids—or 29% of all kids age 6-12 surveyed — have an account on a social network site.

In Mobile, Women Rule Social Networking inShare4 Based on data collected and analyzed using Google Ad Planner, I recently discovered that in Social Media, women rule. Across almost every major social network, the balance was revealing and in some cases, profound. Facebook: Male: 43% Female: 57% Delicious Male: 48% Female: 52% Docstoc Male: 41% Female: 59% Flickr Male: 45% Female: 55% MySpace Male: 36% Female: 64% Ning Male: 41% Female: 59% Twitter Male: 43% Female: 57% Upcoming.org Male: 45% Female: 55% Ustream.tv Male: 34% Female: 66% Yelp Male: 43% Female: 57% According to new reports, it appears that mobile counterparts paint a similar picture. At 55% women to 45% men, mobile social networking fortifies what we’re learning in social media in general. Delving a bit deeper into social demographics, the 35-54 age group led the fray for active social networking via mobile devices followed closely by those 25-34. In early March, comScore published a report that documented triple-digit growth in Facebook and Twitter mobile access.

Kids More Likely to Own a Cellphone Than a Book, Study Finds As technology becomes more a part of our day-to-day lives, some are worried that it is stunting the education of children by taking away time from activities like reading. A startling discovery from the London-based National Literacy Trust finds that children are more likely these days to own a cell phone than they are a book. The study, which NLT will publish next week, ties cell phone penetration to the presence of books in a child's home, but are these conclusions fair to draw? A survey of 17,000 U.K. children between the ages of 7 and 16 found that while 86% owned a cell phone, only 73% said they owned a book. The NLT believes a child's access to books has a direct effect on their reading ability, finding that 80% of children reading at their expect levels have their own books. "Our research illustrates the clear link with literacy resources at home and a child's reading ability," said Jonathan Douglas, Director of the NLT. Redefining "Reading" Are Parents to Blame?
