It is doubtful whether any of the pioneers involved at this time had a real appreciation of how the use of email would eventually be taken up and widely adopted. An email client, or Mail User Agent (MUA), is a program that accesses email stored on a (usually) remote server and is used to send and receive email messages. IMAP and POP Before discussing some of the popular open source email clients in use, it is useful to understand a little of the protocols used by email clients. POP clients will store email on the local client machine, usually a user’s computer, so email messages are more vulnerable to loss unless adequate backup procedures are in place on the user’s computer. Penelope/Eudora Plugin for Mozilla (addon 4772) Eudora goes Open Source : Penelope Eudora 8 is now... Eudora OSE. After much discussion and feedback, it became readily apparent that the original name would inevitably lead to confusion amongst the users – and that just wouldn’t do. The last version of Eudora that was developed commercially for Mac was 6.2, and 7.1 for Windows. Eudora OSE is the Open Source Edition of one of the internet’s most pioneering and enduring applications. Eudora OSE integrates so tightly with specific versions of the underlying code that it is highly recommended for users to install the entire application, rather than trying to run the extension on top of Thunderbird. Eudora OSE does not have every feature and behavior of the commercial versions so it was misleading to call it “version 8”. The codename for the Open Source Eudora project – as it was originally announced, and as it exists today – is Penelope. The new name marks a new beginning. Gmail Tries to Be Less Creepy, Fails - ReadWriteWeb Gmail, Google's powerful web based email service, announced some changes to its contact management features today. Contact management has for some time been a contentious matter among Google Account holders - the company does strange and mysterious things with your email contacts, including tying them in to some other applications without anyone's permission. Today's new changes failed to alleviate those concerns, perhaps making the situation even less clear than it was before. My Contacts contains the contacts you explicitly put in your address book (via manual entry, import or sync) as well as any address you've emailed a lot (we're using five or more times as the threshold for now). Taking a look at my new contacts page raises some questions though. It appears that Google has issued an obtuse policy around an opt-out feature while even bigger questions remain.

Why email continues to be a poor project management tool - McGee’s Musings There’s no doubt that anyone who devotes a minute’s thought to it will conclude that email is a nearly useless tool for project management. Why then does email continue to be the default tool for most project management activity? My first thought is that few people, in fact, devote any thought to the systemic role of communications in project management settings. If they consider communications at all, they assume that sending messages implies that they will be effectively received. That is not a symmetry that can be safely assumed. For those experienced and wise enough to get past that barrier, they still need to become aware of the spectrum of potential choices for technologies to support relevant project communications and to invest design effort to use those technologies to create an effective communications environment. It’s like a vampire, sucking our plasma.
