Markets are in turmoil - here's why Image copyright Getty Images When in fog, tread carefully - particularly if you are not sure where the cliff edge is. Another morning and another day of trading screens showing a sea of red. As I write this the FTSE 100 is down 2.6%, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong is down 3.9% and the German Dax is down 3.1%. Of the 21 major global stock markets, 19 are down on the same period last year. The great sell off continues. Why? It's a mix - part economic fundamentals, part market emotion as herding investors follow each other down a negative spiral, fearful of being left beached as the tide goes out, and part brute market forces, the major trading houses looking to make a profitable turn on share prices which they bet are not going up any time soon. First, let's look at the economic fundamentals. The engines of growth There are three major economic blocks that markets watch for signs of turbulence - the engines of global growth. Each of these vital engines has some worrying rattles. And then withdrew.

Kung Pao Chicken Recipe Here’s the recipe you all might have been waiting for – the legendary Kung Pao Chicken! I have wanted to make this for the longest time but have just finally got around to doing so now. Kung Pao chicken first originated in central-western China and has become very popular in the United States. This is the westernized version of kung pao chicken consisting of wok fried chicken pieces, roasted peanuts, scallions and a spicy sauce. For those of you that have been waiting for a Chinese chicken recipe that doesn’t use a deep fryer – this is it. Even though you can deep fry the chicken pieces this time we are frying the chicken in the wok. Ingredients:1lb boneless-skinless chicken breasts (cut into 1” pieces) 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 teaspoons sesame oil 3 tablespoons green onions (chopped) 3 garlic cloves (minced) ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes ½ teaspoon powdered ginger 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 teaspoons sugar 1/3 cup dry roasted peanuts

Paella - Spanish I've had lots of hits and misses with this Spanish classic, adding ridiculous, overwhelming amounts of saffron to try getting it as yellow as it is in Spain. Then I found out the Spanish sometimes use colouring! So, here at last is the Delia paella – easy, no fuss, and the good thing is it serves six people as a complete meal, needing no accompaniment. Serves 6 This recipe is taken from How to Cook Book Two. Once you have peeled, chopped, prepared and assembled everything, heat the oil in the pan over a fairly high heat. Next add the onion, pepper and chorizo and fry these over a medium heat for 6-8 minutes, or until they're nicely tinged brown at the edges. Next, bring everything up to a gentle simmer, turn the heat down and cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Next, return the chicken, along with the prawns and peas, to the pan and continue to simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked, adding a little more hot liquid if you think it's necessary.

Gravitational Waves - The Impact On You, Me And The World - NDTV.com New York: After decades of research and nearly a billion dollars, some of the world's smartest people have managed a super-feat: they've detected gravitational waves. The discovery means scientists have found a new way to measure, further explore our universe, and understand how Earth was created in the so-called Big Bang. What's being billed as the biggest scientific breakthrough in 100 years is based on the LIGO method (more on that in just a bit). Experts say it's near-certain to win a Nobel Prize, but deciding which of the nearly 1,000 scientists involved across the world should be nominated could be challenging. And in the meantime, what does it mean for you and me? The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) Livingston Laboratory detector site is located near Livingston, Louisiana. The Ligo method means that scientists are not confined to just looking at the universe, but can listen to it.

Best Burger Recipe Ever with Secret Sauce - DIY, recipe Seriously, this is the best burger recipe ever–it’s a Ben favorite. I am kinda a stickler when it comes to homemade burgers. I can’t stand the dryness of pre-constructed or frozen patties, or when the patty turns into a giant dome that I can hardly bite into–and my burger muuust have cheese. So last year I set about creating the perfect burger, and you know what? I don’t even make it on the grill. Burger Ingredients: 2 lbs ground beef 85/15 sesame seed buns 1/2 cup of grated Monterrey jack cheese 1/4 cup BBQ sauce season salt to taste cracked black pepper onion powder We usually like to buy extra lean ground beef around these parts, but when it comes to a juicy burger, you’ve gotta make an exception. Combine the ground beef, grated cheese, bbq sauce, and seasonings. I cook the patties on this really cool skillet that has grill lines. Reduce heat to medium and allow this side of the patty to cook for about 4-6 minutes, but make sure it doesn’t burn. click here for more yummy recipes Burger

22 recipe ideas for leftover rice | Lifeandstyle For a foodstuff that is consumed by half the world's population, in the west, we seem to value it so lightly. Of all the rice cooked at home in the UK, we throw away a staggering 40,000 tonnes every year, according to WRAP's Household Food and Drink Waste in the United Kingdom 2012 report. The statistics from other countries aren't any better. And to add to this appalling waste of a valuable food staple, there is a massive environmental impact in terms of water wasted too. Having said that, I don't think I have ever cooked the exact amount of rice I need. The advice on looking after rice is that it should be cooled as quickly as possible after cooking before storing in the fridge. The recipes I have chosen to include are made with basmati rice. 1. I can't authentically replicate this Malay dish of cooked rice dressed with a spicy and tart chilli and shrimp paste, as the herbs typically used are unavailable. Meryl Streep says 'we're all Africans, really'? Technically, sure, but ... Meryl Streep probably would have been better off calling us all jelly donuts. The "Out of Africa" actress, who heads up this year's Berlin Film Festival jury, fielded a trio of questions about diversity during a news conference Monday, and her comment that "We're all Africans, really" set off tone-deaf alarms all over the place. You know, because #OscarsSoWhite. Streep was, according to the Associated Press, fielding a question from an Egyptian journalist who asked whether she — and by implication the rest of the panelists, all of whom are white — could understand films from the Middle East and Africa. #OscarsSoWhite: Full coverage of the boycott and Hollywood's reaction "I don't know very much, honestly, about the Middle East," said the first-time jury president, who is 66 and has three Oscars and 16 other Oscar nominations under her belt. Her words appeared to be intended to echo President John F. And that whole JFK-said-he's-a-jelly-donut story?

Looking up old flame? Think twice It sounds innocent. You get to wondering whatever happened to that special someone you dated in high school or college, so you track her, or him, down online and send an e-mail. Your old flame is thrilled to hear from you. It happens a lot more often than you'd think. "It starts with e-mails," says Nancy Kalish, a psychology professor at Cal State Sacramento who has studied the phenomenon. C'mon, we're not talking about people looking for an affair, just a cup of coffee with an old friend. That may be the plan, but Kalish says that's not how it often works out. Back in the 1990s, it was rare for a married person to reach out to a first love. Of course, most of them don't intend to get into trouble when they log on, and not all of them do. "People are just surfing the Internet on a whim," Kalish says. Sound familiar? And Reunion.com is just one of several sites that make it easier than ever to track down an old friend. So it's never been easier to look up and hook up with an old crush.

persian-style pilaf with chickpeas, mint & harissa recipe I'm finding it a little hard to believe we are in 2011 already. It only feels like yesterday I was welcoming my first born into the world... and now she will be turning 5 this year! People are forever going on about how fast kids grow up. I now understand what they were talking about. What have I signed myself up for? And then bam, Ada's nearing 5 and Kye 3. This persian-style pilaf is my version of a harissa chicken rice salad featured in the latest issue of Cuisine magazine. I found as I ate the leftovers straight from the fridge the next day, that it keeps well. I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday season (in the sun and the snow!). persian-style pilaf with chickpeas, mint & harissa recipeThis pilaf can be served hot, warm or at room temperature. pilaf Mix harissa paste with the juice of 1/2-1 lemon and the extra virgin olive oil.

UK companies must reveal gender pay gap under new plans | Business News Britain’s banks and other large companies will be made to reveal how much more they award male employees in pay and bonuses, under Government plans to close the gender pay gap and tackle inequality. Under the proposals, to be enshrined in law, all companies with more than 250 employees must publish their gender pay gap on their websites while new league tables will show which types of companies are the worst offenders. In addition, around 8,000 of the country’s largest employers will have to publish the number of men and women in each pay range – to make clear where the pay gap is at its worst. Bonuses will also be included in the statistics to ensure firms can’t discriminate “via the back door”, a Government spokeswoman said. There will also be a new effort to encourage more girls to take maths and sciences at A level. Equalities groups largely welcomed the package of measures.
