Upcoming Trends of Web Design in 2010 In 2010 we are seeing the continued mainstreaming of everyday goods and services onto the internet. As everything becomes virtual, the internet becomes the first port of call when a person needs a new good or requires a new service. More and more people, from all walks of life, are becoming familiar with the internet. Particularly in the last year, as smart-phones introduce the concept of web-services to people who would not normally have exposure to an internet connected computer. This changes typical user expectations and influences how clients want to market on the web. We are seeing JavaScript pushing out its boundaries, new design philosophies like grid systems becoming commonplace, bigger bolder headings and banners and more and more iconification of websites. JavaScript – Light boxes, carousel, tabs and more! JavaScript is going strong in 2010 and in fact we’re seeing plenty of innovative use of this great client side language. Design style can be practical. Grid based websites

The News Diamond reimagined as ‘The Digital News Lifecycle’ | On Here’s a wonderful reimagining of the News Diamond from the first part of my Model for a 21st Century Newsroom. Gaurav Mishra’s diagram (shown above) takes my rhombus (shown below) and plots it against two axes. It’s rather lovely. Helpfully, however, Mishra takes the concept forward a little. As he explains: “my “news lifecycle” is different from Paul Bradshaw’s “news diamond” in two ways - “1. It’s fair to say that my diamond does take the perspective of a news organisation – that’s who it was aimed at. Anyway, Mishra poses some questions: How do we increase the number and variety of sources in the process of creating, curating and consuming news? I’d be very interested in any responses. In the meantime, here’s those original diagrams for your conceptual enjoyment… As it happens, the diamond was just another way of showing the following flow diagram from the same post, so now I have 3 diagrams to refer to… Like this: Like Loading...

R.I.P. Chatroulette, 2009-2010 - Internet Culture It always seems the stars that burn the brightest are the ones to flame out the fastest. So it was as unsurprising as it was sad when the news broke early Tuesday that Chatroulette’s cultural relevance had expired overnight. Cause of death: penises. The world was a different place when the site launched in November of 2009. Those were heady days that followed. But the warning signs were all there, grim indications that such great heights were unsustainable. The world is full of big fans of the penis — God knows I’m one of the most devoted. In the interest of journalistic integrity, I went on Chatroulette this morning to verify its obsolescence.

Thoughts on Creativity and Design Process | Abduzeedo | Graphic I will start this post off by saying that everybody is creative and for some that might come as a surprise, but I believe in the idea of creativity as a means of solving problems; the easiest and most efficient way possible. When I say easy I'm referring to the timeframe that it takes to complete the task, and efficient to how well received the work is from the target audience. But the question is what to do when we cannot come up with any good idea or the so terrified creative block. The creative process is something unique because it’s personal, we cannot teach someone how to come up with ideas but we can learn how to organize our thoughts in order to make our ideas easier to achieve in the form of a good design. Overflow of Inspiration We are bombarded with information all day long and even when we are sleeping we might dream and have ideas and therefore inspiration. Create Constraints In order to overcome this problem it’s really important to define some constraints. Delivering

You Couldn't Make This Up Dept: "Why is Mars' Moon Phobos Hollow Mars' Moon Phobos has been analyzed as being one-third hollow according to European Space Agency reports, which has triggered some wild and utterly fascinating rumors and speculation that we've featured below. From "The Phobos Blog" -- published on March 25th: General , Science 25 March, 2010 17:21 Radio science result from 2008 Phobos Flyby now accepted for publication: We report independent results from two subgroups of the Mars Express Radio Science (MaRS) team who independently analyzed Mars Express (MEX) radio tracking data for the purpose of determining consistently the gravitational attraction of the moon Phobos on the MEX spacecraft, and hence the mass of Phobos. We conclude that the interior of Phobos likely contains large voids. For a Martian moon that is demonstrably "1/3 hollow" ... as measured by two totally independent space programs, and separated by ~20 years ... under any likely astrophysical formation scenario cannot exist as just a "natural" moon.

Early 1900s in Colour - All around the world All around the world - Franny Wentzel - Thursday, May 6th, 2010 : goo [previous] :: [next] In the early part of the 20th century French-Jewish capitalist Albert Kahn set about to collect a photographic record of the world, the images were held in an 'Archive of the Planet'. Dirty UNIX Joke - NYT Facebook Rivals This morning’s New York Times features a story on a group of NYU undergraduates working on a would-be Facebook killer called Diaspora*, the software for which “will let users set up their own personal servers, called seeds, create their own hubs and fully control the information they share.” The article is a neat read both for the specifics of the proposal and the anti-Facebook sentiment it highlights amongst young’uns in the tech community; it also marks what may be the first time a dirty UNIX joke has managed to sneak into the hallowed pages of the Times. A tipster draws our attention to the writing on the left side of the chalkboard behind the students: “TOUCH GREP UNZIP MOUNT FSCK FSCK FSCK UMOUNT.” Wait a second: That’s not intelligible code! It’s almost as if it has another meaning. Pretty much every command on the blackboard is missing the argument(s) that makes it useful (e.g. filenames for ‘unzip’ and ‘touch’). Update2: Yup: it did.
