Sulphur emissions by ships - Transport Committee 1 Introduction 1. Sulphur dioxide emissions are falling across Europe, but emissions from shipping continue to rise. The shipping industry is therefore being targeted with tighter limits, both internationally and by the European Commission (the Commission). 2. the impact on shipping of more stringent limits on sulphur content in fuel, due to revisions to Annex VI of the International Maritime Organisation's Marine Pollution Convention (hereafter referred to as Annex VI); possible implications for other sectors, such as road haulage; steps which the UK Government could take to assist the maritime sector meet its obligations under Annex VI; and the Commission's proposals to implement the revisions to Annex VI, and the UK Government's stance on those proposals.
