UK will have Europe's worst coronavirus death toll, says study World-leading disease data analysts have projected that the UK will become the country worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic in Europe, accounting for more than 40% of total deaths across the continent. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle predicts 66,000 UK deaths from Covid-19 by August, with a peak of nearly 3,000 a day, based on a steep climb in daily deaths early in the outbreak. The analysts also claim discussions over “herd immunity” led to a delay in the UK introducing physical distancing measures, which were brought in from 23 March in England when the coronavirus daily death toll was 54. Portugal, by comparison, had just one confirmed death when distancing measures were imposed. The IHME modelling forecasts that by 4 August the UK will see a total of 66,314 deaths – an average taken from a large estimate range of between 14,572 and 219,211 deaths, indicating the uncertainties around it.

Coronavirus: Significant social distancing needed 'until vaccine found' Image copyright Reuters The UK must keep a "significant level" of social distancing until a vaccine for coronavirus is found, a scientist advising the government has said. Prof Neil Ferguson told the BBC there was "little leeway" to relax measures without "something... in their place" - such as testing and contact tracing. A three-week extension to the lockdown is expected to be announced later. Labour said it would support an extension, but called for details on how and when the lockdown will end. Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced strict curbs on life in the UK on 23 March, as the government sought to limit the spread of the virus.

Dominic Raab insists government will deliver 100,000 coronavirus tests a day, despite series of setbacks Dominic Raab has insisted the government’s commitment to deliver 100,000 coronavirus tests a day within weeks still stands despite a series of setbacks. Officials admitted earlier this week that none of the new antibody tests ordered by the government were sensitive enough to use. Ministers had hoped they would allow experts to test for the presence of the disease in the past, alongside tests that show whether or not someone is currently suffering from Covid-19. Nicola Sturgeon humiliation: How John Curtice brutally exposed flaw in SNP's Brexit plot From the outset, Ms Sturgeon has been clear that she wants Scotland to remain in the EU if she is not satisfied with the UK's Brexit terms. The SNP leader has often argued that Scotland voted 62 percent in favour of remaining in the 2016 vote, and that therefore affords the Scottish First Minister a mandate to pursue EU membership. While Scotland did vote in favour of staying in the EU, polling expert John Curtice highlighted in March 2017 that support for Ms Sturgeon's Brexit demands may not be as unanimous as first thought.

White House doctor says Trump doesn't need coronavirus test The president does not need to take a test to determine if he's positive for coronavirus because two interactions he had with known patients were "low risk," a White House doctor said in a memo released Friday. The memo was made public hours after Trump said he would be tested. "Not for that reason, but because I think I will do it anyway," the president said Friday when asked about his interaction at his Mar-a-Lago resort last weekend with an aide to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Fabio Wajngarten, who turned up positive. Coronavirus: Why did infections shoot up in South Korea? Image copyright Getty Images South Korea has seen by far the highest numbers of coronavirus cases outside of China - within a week confirmed cases jumped from a few dozen to more than 900. The country had seemed well prepared and so the skyrocketing numbers have many asking how this happened - and whether a similar sudden outbreak could happen elsewhere. In South Korea, more than half of the Covid-19 cases have been linked to a religious sect and its critics say the group's secretive nature helped the virus go undetected. Why did the number of cases spike so suddenly? Authorities have identified the fringe Christian group Shincheonji Church as being at the heart of this outbreak.

UK coronavirus response: What does Britain know that Europe doesn't? Flanked by the country's chief scientific and medical advisers, the Prime Minister announced that his government was moving to the "delay" phase of its plan to tackle the outbreak, and warned Britons that they were facing their "worst public health crisis for a generation" and should be prepared "to lose loved ones before their time." And yet, faced with such grave prospects, would the UK be taking the same stringent precautions as other affected countries? No, was the answer.
