Working backward to solve problems - Maurice Ashley See Maurice Ashley's blog here. He's the international chess grandmaster, and his motto is, "Your passion is your window to the world." In chess, retrograde analysis is a computational method used to solve game positions for optimal play by working backward from known outcomes (e.g. checkmate), such as the construction of endgame tablebases. In game theory at large, this method is called backward induction. Here is a list of requirements (the whole handbook, actually) for a chess grandmaster. How to Change the WordPress Login Logo to Your Own Custom Logo One of the more annoying aspects of the default WordPress install is that the login page is plastered with a large WordPress logo that links to WordPress.org. Unless your visitors are somewhat blog savvy, most probably have no idea what “WordPress” is. They thought they were on Big Bob’s Blog, and now they’re seeing a logo for something called WordPress. Even worse, when they click it, it even takes them to a place called WordPress. What the …? Not to worry. There are some fairly complex plugins that I’ve seen that will change nearly everything about your Admin areas, including the logo on the login page, but many people just need a simple solution to do this one simple thing. Below are three plugins that will get the job done for you, changing the WordPress logo for your logo. 1. The first option, the “Uber Login Logo” is so simple, it should be called the “Uber Simple Login Logo.” 2. The second option is slightly more sophisticated than the first, but not by much. 3. A Simple Fix

How to Get AP Style Dates and Times on Your WordPress Site The Associated Press (AP) in the United States provides guidelines that many news organizations and other publications follow. If you are keen on adhering to this style, then that’s easily done by knowing the rules and simply following them when you write your content. But what about the dates on your site? As you or your writers create your content, you can’t control how the date is outputted on your site. This plugin lets you choose different AP styles for your dates, as well as some common styles that are not etched in stone yet are popular by news organizations nonetheless, such as using the word “Today” instead of the date for items from the current day. One drawback with this plugin is that you will need to go into your theme’s files and replace the date code with the code provided by the plugin. Download the AP Style Dates and Times plugin here.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup PIN brute force vulnerability « .braindump – RE and stuff Wi-Fi Protected Setup PIN brute force vulnerability A few weeks ago I decided to take a look at the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) technology. I noticed a few really bad design decisions which enable an efficient brute force attack, thus effectively breaking the security of pretty much all WPS-enabled Wi-Fi routers. I reported this vulnerability to CERT/CC and provided them with a list of (confirmed) affected vendors. Detailed information about this vulnerability can be found in this paper: Brute forcing Wi-Fi Protected Setup – Please keep in mind that the devices mentioned there are just a tiny subset of the affected devices. I would like to thank the guys at CERT for coordinating this vulnerability. Update (12/29/2011 – 20:15 CET) As you probably already know, this vulnerability was independently discovered by Craig Heffner (/dev/ttyS0, Tactical Network Solutions) as well – I was just the one who reported the vulnerability and released information about it first.
