DIY Chindi Reindeer

DIY Chindi Reindeer
The moment I spotted these colorfully wrapped reindeer and moose at Anthropologie last December, I knew I had to DIY it for HonestlyWTF this holiday season. Created in the style of vibrant Chindi rugs from Jaipur, India, these wrapped reindeer are incredibly fun to make, are a clever way to repurpose old t-shirts, and make fabulous gifts! You’ll need:paper mache reindeer or any other animal1 yard total of various colors of cotton or wool jersey2 small brown pom pomshot glue gunlots of glue sticksscissorsjingle bells (optional)string (optional) Start by cutting the fabric, along the width, into 1″ strips. Beginning in the middle of the torso will serve as the guideline. Continue twisting, glueing, and wrapping. As the rope begins to runs out, tie a knot at the end. Keep wrapping and again, follow the contours of the reindeer. There will be areas where wrapping all the way around won’t be an option. Tie on a few jingle bells around the neck and/or feet . . .

The Zen of Making DIY Dolce & Gabbana Tiara Honestly, how enchanting was Dolce & Gabbana‘s ode to Sicily in their fall collection? Velvet capes and lace dresses were accented by glorious Baroque-inspired accessories. The highlight for me was the cornucopia of ornate tiaras adorned with rhinestones, pearls, and the most darling little ceramic roses. It’s a DIY that is easily mastered with the right supplies, so when in Rome . . . You’ll need:a black velvet headband15 – 20 assorted ceramic roses (or search “ceramic roses” on Etsy or eBay)8 – 10 assorted faux pearls (last seen here)40 – 50 assorted pre-set rhinestones (last seen here)a disposable container or popsicle sticka handful of toothpicksE6000 glue Start by squeezing a small amount of E6000 into a disposable container or onto a wooden popsicle stick. Press the ceramic bead in the center of the headband. Continue adding beads and rhinestones along the middle. Create a pattern, alternating flowers and pearls. Continue gluing pieces to the headband . . . Crowned!

DIY Sachin + Babi Rorschach Necklace Is it a bat, a butterfly, a moth, a pair of wolves, or even two dancers? However you perceive it, we certainly won’t be examining your personality or providing you with a diagnosis today. Instead, we’ve collaborated with Sachin + Babi to create a fabulous statement necklace, inspired by three elements from their Spring 2012 Collection: Rorschach ink blots, leather, and gold! You’ll need:5″ x 7″ piece of faux leather vinylRorschach pattern (available here)8 feet of thin chain (cut into 19 5″ pieces)20-21 inches of thick chain21 4mm jump ringsa black permanent markerdouble sided tapea leather rotary punchsmall sharp scissors2 pairs of pliers Print the downloadable pattern here. Tape the pattern to the backside of the vinyl leather using double sided tape. Let the markings dry and remove the paper from the vinyl to reveal a new pattern. Using the smallest setting on the leather rotary tool, punch out 19 evenly distributed holes along the bottom of the pendant.

DIY Chainmail Necklace You’ll need: Start by separating the jump rings into two halves: 175 open and 175 closed. Thread three closed jump rings onto an open jump ring. Close the ring. Spread the three rings apart, with the rings looking exactly as shown below. The bottom ring will be the end of the necklace and the top two rings, which are spread open over the middle ring, will be where the chain mail begins. Keeping the rings in place with your forefinger and thumb, take an open jump ring and hook it through the front side of the two rings. Add 2 closed rings to the open ring and close. Spread the two rings apart in the same way as the first set of rings. Add 2 closed rings and close. To add an optional fourth row, lay the necklace flat and hook an open ring through first and second closed rings on the right side. I stopped at 4 rows but you can continue adding rows for a more bib-like necklace. Connect the two ends with a single jump ring or clasp. Fini! (top image from here, rest of images by HonestlyWTF)

Ten Tips: Decorating with Vintage Style I love decorating, especially with antiques and vintage pieces. I inherited this trait from my mom, who I can remember hunting for bargains, and stripping and staining furniture when I was a little girl. I grew to love antique furniture and anything vintage, and I’ve decorated most of my home with an eclectic array of vintage finds. One of the best parts of decorating with vintage flair is you can find amazingly cheap pieces of furniture that can be repurposed into something beautiful. The true passion of “antiquing” though comes from the thrill of the hunt…there is nothing more exhilarating than literally stumbling upon (either online or in person) an amazing jewel that you weren’t expecting to find! So, if your interested in jumping into the wonderful world of vintage, here’s my Top Ten Tips for Decorating with Vintage Flair (as well as a few of my favorite finds), I’ve picked up along the way. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. photos: erin for we heart this 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

How to bind your own Hardback Book The art of book binding is an ancient craft, but actually it is not very difficult to do and with almost no practice you can get really awesome results. If you are on the lookout for fun craft projects or quick ways of making nice presents and gifts, then this could be the project for you. I know that there are other Instructables on the art of book binding but this project is meant to be a simple quick project that will give a very acceptable finish, and a book that looks like it has been professionally made, yet without the need for any special equipment. All you will need is: Some paper Minimum really is about 32 A4 or US Letter sized sheets, to make a half A4 (half US Letter sized book), although smaller books can be made as can ones with more pages. Some stiff cardboard or corrugated (fluted) cardboard Some fabric or leather Any old stuff will do for the cover.
