Twitter Background Design How-To and Best Practices
This post was originally published in 2009 The tips and techniques explained may be outdated. With Twitter quickly becoming the hottest site to be seen on, everyone wants to stand out from the crowd. There has already been a range of quality designs showcased on various sites, which has shown an emergence of trends such as the ‘sidebar’. Let’s take a look at some of the best practices around Twitter background design and get to work creating our own. We all recognise the default blue Twitter background right? Generally speaking, there are three main approaches when it comes to creating your Twitter background (other than a boring solid colour!) 1. The repeating background pattern is the age old website background effect, create a repeating graphic and upload the file to your account. 2. 3. The third general approach to Twitter backgrounds is the use of an exceptionally large background image that fills the whole screen. Sidebar or No Sidebar? Let’s Design Our Own

In the vast majority of cases, webmasters don't have to do anything for their sites to work correctly with prerendering. Google Hack To See If Your Site Was Hit By Penguin? -BRAND Here is one more crazy thing for the Penguin Igloo - a search hack that may show you if you were hit by the Penguin update! The news came from a WebmasterWorld thread this morning by a Junior Member who was hit by Penguin codenamed Martin Ice Web. He said that when he was searching for his keywords and added a negative parameter for amazon, his rankings went back to normal. For example, he search for [blue widget -amazon] and his rankings pre-Penguin showed up on Google for the query [blue widget]. I tried this myself on a ton of examples of sites that were hit in the forums and I was unable to replicate it to the extreme but it does kind of work. For example, a Google Webmaster Help thread has the owner of discounted-hotels-london.co.uk saying that [strand palace hotel -amazon.com] brings up his site on page one. This is pretty wild! I tried it on some others but failed. This seems so weird. So who knows?

Facebook Set for Debut After IPO Seals $104 Billion Value- Bloomberg Facebook Inc. (FB) hovered near the initial public offering price in its trading debut, following a record IPO that made the social network more costly than almost every company in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. (SPX) The shares rose 23 cents above the IPO price of $38 as of 4 p.m. in New York. Underwriters bought Facebook’s stock to keep it from falling below the IPO price, people with knowledge of the matter said today. “They squeezed the lemon dry here,” said Dan Veru, chief investment officer at Palisade Capital Management, who didn’t participate in the IPO. The bankers supported the stock after Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. faced difficulties delivering trade execution messages following the IPO, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the transactions are private. 100 Times Earnings The U.S. The IPO price made Facebook, co-founded in 2004 by a then- teenage Mark Zuckerberg, the largest company to go public in the U.S. GM’s Offering IPO Performance $176 Million

The Art of using #FollowFriday Effectively If you are an active twitter user, you will be aware of #followfriday, a hashtag that is used to recommend people you like, so that your followers also follow them. As this trend was followed on Fridays, that is why it was named as FollowFriday. The problem with the #Followfriday used nowadays is that people don’t care whom to give recommendation or not. They list a bunch of people and they add a #FF hashtag, so that people could follow them. As these #ff tags are usually devoid of any information and careful reasoning, the total value of a followfriday recommendation gets nullified. Recommend Selectively Your recommendations should be selected by careful thought and reasoning. If you recommend people just for the sake of it or if you have an ulterior motive of making a bond with that person, then you would not be doing the right thing. Also, try to use one tweet for one person. 33 super engagers to follow Be Precise and Effective

Microsoft's social networking site So.cl now open to all users So.cl, an experimental research project from Microsoft, that combines social networking and search to promote learning, is now accepting all users interested in joining the site. The social networking site, pronounced "social," is however not positioned to replace existing full-featured search and social networking tools, and uses a minimal set of features, Microsoft said on the So.cl website. The company expects students will continue to use current social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn and search tools such as Bing and Google. So.cl helps users find and share web pages of interest as students do when they work together, Microsoft said. Besides providing sharing of media including real-time sharing of videos through "video parties", So.cl also helps users create "rich posts," by assembling montages of visual web content. It uses Facebook authentication, but by default does not post any content from So.cl into the user's Facebook stream, Microsoft said.
