Pernille Røge, “Economistes and the Reinvention of Empire: France in the Americas and Africa c. 1750-1802” (Cambridge UP, 2019) In her new book, Economistes and the Reinvention of Empire: France in the Americas and Africa, c. 1750-1802 (Cambridge UP, 2020), Dr. Pernille Røge charts the confluence and reciprocal impacts of ideas and policies espoused by political economists, colonial administrators, planters, and entrepreneurs to reform the French empire in the second half of the eighteenth century. Due to this diffusion of observations and ideas, French economic philosophers who called themselves “economistes” and later “physiocrats” were able to formulate and advocated for new French colonial doctrines that emphasized agricultural development, free labor, commercial liberalization, and colonial economic and legal integration during and after the Seven Years War (1756-1763).

Colin Levy When I was in highschool I spent like a year and a half working on a 5-minute short film. The movie was silly, starred my dad. I made it in my backyard. But somehow it went on to win a national contest called YoungArts, and soon found myself at an award ceremony in NYC, being told I had an appointment with Martin Scorsese. This Is How We’ll Experience Storytelling in the Future In the future, you won’t just consume stories by watching a movie or tuning into a podcast via earbuds. You’ll be standing in the middle of them—maybe you’ll even be able to see the blurry tip of your nose in front of you—with panoramic vision, perhaps a sense of smell, and maybe even the slight feeling of vertigo. “Originally stories were living things,” says Charlie Melcher. “It was a dialogue, something you could interrupt, or physically respond to.” DESISTFILM’S TOP 50 FILMS OF ALL TIME « desistfilm This entry was posted on October 9th, 2012 Sans Soleil To make a list about the best films of all time is in some cases, an exhumation process: Hidden films, which we have to give a breath of life. In Desistfilm we’ve made a commitment to examine our sensibilities in depth, and built our own sentimental canon: Films without which we couldn’t translate a part of the world.
