The Future of Environmentalism: Nanotech and E-Waste Care2 Earth Month: Back to Basics This year, Care2 decided to expand Earth Day into Earth Month, since there is so much to explore when it comes to the environment. Every day in April, we’ll have a post about some of the most important topics for the environment, exploring and explaining the basics. It’s a great tool to help you get started with helping the environment — or help explain it to others. See the whole series here. What better way to wrap up Care2′s Earth Month than to address two emerging concerns for the environmental movement? E-Waste: Why It’s A Problem E-waste is a catch-all term encompassing any electronic product that is discarded after it reaches the end of its useful life. Unfortunately, there often isn’t any safe way available to dispose of electronics. Where do “recycled” electronics end up? Ideally, you should recycle these products to help ease the load on the environment. How can you properly dispose of e-waste?

indymedia Six pieds sur Terre Le Grand Soir Helping Women Helps the Planet Data increasingly shows that supporting and protecting women’s rights has positive benefits for the planet. Microcredit programs for sustainable agriculture, improved reproductive health and education play a major role in determining whether a woman will become self-sufficient enough to start her own business, or decide whether or not to have children. This, in turn, has strong ripple effects on natural resources. In poorer nations, this growing trend is especially relevant as those populations are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Some of the social benefits of giving women increased authority include improved health, self-esteem and community ties in addition to a newfound top-down business approach that focuses on employing women in regions where their predominant role has historically been childrearing and food preparation. World’s First Genetically Modified Babies ‘Created’ in US Anthony Gucciardi, ContributorActivist Post In a developing story, the Daily Mail is now reporting that the very first (admitted) group of genetically modified babies have been ‘created’ in the United States. The scientists involved reportedly announced the result on the night of June 27th, stating that 30 babies were born using genetic modification techniques. Furthermore, 2 of the babies tested were found to contain genes from a total of 3 different parents. The experiment also lasted over 3 years or more according to the researchers, which may be one of many. The ‘GM babies’ were born into women who had trouble conceiving their own children. Genetecists state that this genetic modification method may one day be used to create babies “with extra, desired characteristics such as strength or high intelligence.” The news comes after it was previously reported by British scientists that scientists were creating human-animal ‘monsters’.
