27 Best Fat Burning Foods to Eat - Food to Help Lose Weight and Belly Fat Getty Images If you feel like you're making smart moves to lose weight but the scale isn't moving the way you want, your diet may contain some sneaky foods that can lead to water retention (ahem, salt!) and a higher calorie intake. Start by cutting back on ultra-processed foods, bubbly drinks, gum, and sugary beverages that can increase bloating. While no single food can "spot train" belly fat, some smart swaps can also improve gut health (eliminating cramps and gas!) and help you feel less puffy.

What we lose when animals go extinct This story appears in the October 2019 issue of National Geographic magazine. Most of the animals shown here are among the more than 28,000 species of animals and plants that the International Union for Conservation of Nature says are threatened with extinction. That number actually understates the risk. Since 1964, when the IUCN established a “red list” of threatened species and began compiling data gathered worldwide, the list has become the preeminent global database of endangered life and an essential tool for conservation policy. Yet the IUCN has been able to assess only about 106,000 species of the more than 1.5 million species of animals and more than 300,000 plants that scientists have described and named—which they estimate is less than a quarter of what’s really out there.

10 superb pictures from Nature Photographer of the Year 2019 - Country Life A cheeky duck and a majestic arch of the aurora borealis are among the magnificent photographs honoured by the 2019 Nature Photographer of the Year competition. The competition — which only started up a few years ago — may not have the same high profile or lengthy history as the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, but it still attracted 14,000 entries from 73 different countries. The overall winner was this incredible shot of a pair of hares by a Hungarian photographer named Csaba Daróczi. Csaba was taking a walk in Kiskunsag, near the village of Bócsa, when he spotted a colony of rabbits and started taking photos. ‘After a while I saw them jumping high in the air, especially when they were fighting over food,’ he explains. ‘When I saw that, I realised that I wanted to take that photo immediately.’

The compound housed Persian fallow deer and Barbary sheep. “At no point was there a risk to public safety and there was no danger of any animals escaping the park’s perimeter fencing,” the spokeswoman said. She said the wilds dogs were returned to their compound unharmed.
