Rashad Alakbarov Paints with Shadows and Light This is kind of flying all over the internet right now, but I couldn’t resist sharing. Artist Rashad Alakbarov from Azerbaijan uses suspended translucent objects and other found materials to create light and shadow paintings on walls. The jaw-dropping light painting above, made with an array of colored airplanes is currently on view at the Fly to Baku exhibition at De Pury Gallery in London through January 29th. (via art wednesday, fasels suppe) Ballerinas take over the Big Apple by Dane Shitagi & Chicquero Dane Shitagi is a NYC based photographer. Originally from Honolulu, he followed his instincts to live the photographic life. Taking inspiration from the sights and sounds of “the city” as well as the energy and diverse arts, Dane has formed a unique and heartfelt body of work that is sooo beautiful and personal. Rather than molding his ideas to the studio set, he has taken his creativity and inspiration from the world outside – preferring the rawness and atmosphere that only a living city like the Big Apple can bring. We loved this project of shooting ballerinas from the New York City Ballet all over the city with a delicate and soft vibe combined to the streets, traffic, landscapes, city sights of NYC as a background! Sweet!

A Rainbow Projected Across The World Anyone looking at the sky last week in Newtownards, Ireland would have seen a giant rainbow crossing the city horizon from Scrabo Tower. This phenomenon in the distance is the work of Yvette Mattern, a Puerto Rican-born, New-York-based artist who is taking the Global Rainbow around the world, aiming to stimulate social diversity by using it as an icon of hope. Mattern’s work consists of seven parallel laser beams representing the seven colors of the rainbow, and it was developed to be projected across large, open, densely populated areas. Mattern created the projection on January 19th, 2009 to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in New York, where it was projected from the top of a Wall Street building in lower Manhattan.

15 sharp-witted, reading-themed cartoons from an Iranian comic contest Last year, Iran Cartoons organized an international contest for single-panel cartoons on the theme of reading. Some of the submissions were dark and sarcastic, others optimistically inspiring. Some were make-you-think obtuse, others pleasantly straightforward.
