experiments | matt kenefick Visit Always Beautiful. Microsoft challenged Big Spaceship to take on the beta release of IE9 – to explore the new features and functionality of the browser and push the limits of what’s possible. We responded with "Always Beautiful" – an interactive experience that uses the history of the web as a personal paintbrush. IE9’s new support for web standards and SVG are impressive, but hard to comprehend in the abstract – we wanted to show how these new capabilities translate into unparalleled opportunities for users and developers. Drawing inspiration from the ever-evolving trends of the Web and setting them against a soundtrack from recording artist Ming, users generate a completely unique piece of artwork from a library of Web-inspired graphic assets we created. Me and one other developer worked hours on end to learn about seldom used technologies and implement them in a fast and efficient way. There was a great learning about how to deploy to Windows Azure.

Babel | Babel, the cat who would be King - Interactive book for children Karim Maaloul was born in the southern suburbs of Tunis. He spent his childhood surrounded by sheep blocking the streets, and goat thieving flowers from gardens. Local wildlife quickly became an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Later, he studied illustration and comics in Brussels. After two publications: Elephant's Memory (published by Les éditions du Pépin) and The story of the day and night (published by Lo Pais d'enfance), he turned to the enigmatic world of computers and the Internet. In 2009, he became one of the co-founders of Epic, a Belgian creative agency specializing in the creation of digital content and where he is now in charge of design and flash development. For Babel, he uses the various skills acquired throughout his career.

Welcome to the Hill Holliday | Erwin-Penland S.H.E.D. magneticNorth - a digital design company, based in the UK Today, after weeks of prep we are finally able to introduce our latest project Plot to the world. Plot, meet the world. World, meet Plot. The pilot project explores the idea of ‘on-demand gardens’ - private garden spaces that can be booked by the hour within city centres. We created it in response to the move towards people’s preference to stream rather than buy and the shift in consumer appetite towards access to goods and services instead of owning them. People living in urban areas, specifically those without their own outdoor space, often only desire the use of a garden in the warmer summer months. To us all of the above highlighted the opportunity for an exciting new solution to this problem. The introduction of this new concept means that city residents and workers can still have use of a private garden to read, eat, exercise, come together with friends and hold their meet ups, book clubs and any other group get together within. The best part: we’re going to do it without a single line of JavaScript. To make this banner truly useful, our goal will be to use individual photos dropped into our HTML, not simply one long CSS background that repeats. This is pretty tricky but we’ll walk you through exactly how it works. The Idea The concept here is simple. As you can see, we basically just have a strip of images that move their position from left to right. This effect is easy enough with JavaScript or Flash, but as an exercise let’s see if we can pull it off in pure CSS. Hurdles As promised, this is a pretty easy project, but only because I’ve done most of the problem solving for you. The Easy Way The easy way is to take the images that you want to display, import them into Photoshop, then combine them into one long image. The Hard Way Let’s Build It Starting CSS Demo
