Sketchup 4 Architect Racehorse's Paintings Compared to Jackson Pollock Art collectors are quickly snapping up paintings created by a former racing horse, with some aficionados comparing the works to those of famous abstract expressionists. The horse artist phenom is Metro Meteor. Before bad knees ended his career on the track, he was considered to be one of the fastest turf sprinters at Belmont and Saratoga. He won eight races and $300,000 in purse money. Now he’s retired and into painting. PHOTOS: Animals That Make Art Journalist A.J. Arts and crafts activities are commonly used as enrichment in zoos and other facilities. Other animals, however, seem to focus on their craft. BLOG: Horses Help Wired Kids Unplug Owners Ron and Wendy Krajewski inspired the activity. He describes what happened next: “The first thing was to teach him to target the canvas. After he created his first painting, I was surprised at how good it actually looked. Money earned from Metro’s paintings now goes to help the New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program.

The weirdest and wackiest animal discoveries of 2011 As the year draws to a close, here's a look back at some of the weirdest animal discoveries of 2011. From the "aflockalypse" to zombie caterpillars and our own set of animal superheroes, it's been a wacky ride. 1. Zombie ants The year was a big one for zombie insects. In May, in the journal BMC Ecology, researcher David Hughes from Pennsylvania State University reported that a parasitic fungus infects forest ants to fulfill its bidding. Another report in September found the genetic culprit that sends caterpillars to the treetops, where they liquefy and rain infectious death down on their peers. 2. This year started with a bang as scores of birds fell from the skies in January. It started with the mysterious deaths of thousands of blackbirds in Arkansas and Louisiana around New Years' eve; this was followed by several reports of dead fish washing ashore and many more "massive" animal die-offs. 3. 4. Scientists aren't the only ones turning miraculous tricks this year. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Building a Super Robust Robot Hand German researchers have built an anthropomorphic robot hand that can endure collisions with hard objects and even strikes from a hammer without breaking into pieces. In designing the new hand system, researchers at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, part of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), focused on robustness. They may have just built the toughest robot hand yet. The DLR hand has the shape and size of a human hand, with five articulated fingers powered by a web of 38 tendons, each connected to an individual motor on the forearm. The main capability that makes the DLR hand different from other robot hands is that it can control its stiffness. The video below shows the fingers moving and the hand getting hit by a hammer and a metal bar: The DLR team didn’t want to build an anatomically correct copy of a human hand, as other teams have. Another key element in the DLR design is a spring mechanism connected to each tendon. Why build such a super strong hand? More photos: Images: DLR
