With an abusive history, a weak, pale William arrives in Little Weirwold and is placed under the care of Tom Oakley, a healthy, middle-aged man famous in his close-knit village for being a recluse, just because he lives next to the local church in accordance to the specific instructions of William’s mother. Tom reluctantly agrees to take him in, in the name of ‘national duty’, neither of them considering how this small act of ‘national duty’ was going to change their lives forever. And thus began a journey of recovery and rediscovery for the two of them. This journey makes up the crux of the novel.

50 Movies You Have to Watch Before You Die Movies are an important part of popular culture. You may view them as less refined than books, but the stories are essentially the same. As much an art form as painting, video games, music, and books, movies capture our imagination and show us perspectives we’d never see on our own. Life is short – don’t let it pass you by without seeing these movie classics: 50. The Iron Giant (1999) The Seven Best Silent Short Films for Language Teaching - Kieran Donaghy As many short films are artistic, they have limited appeal in the commercial marketplace and are funded from diverse sources. To make them easier to sell worldwide, they often contain little or no dialogue, which makes comprehension much easier. As a result, they offer intensely ‘filmic’ experiences, using images and movement, sequence and duration, sound and music to tell their stories. These silent films are perfect for the language classroom as they can be used with any level – the teacher just needs to adapt the difficulty of the task to match the level of the students.

The Seven Best Short Films for ELT Students - Kieran Donaghy I’ve been writing lesson plans designed around short films for my website Film English for six years. Teachers often ask me how I find the short films I use in my lesson plans. The answer is quite simple: I’ve watched literally thousands of short films and developed an instinct for the type of engaging and simple short films which will work in the ELT classroom. GritFX T-Shirts Magazine - StumbleUpon Personally, I thought the first year of the new decade to be rather lacklustre as far as cinema goes. The sheer volume of reckless, morally inept comedies and action films was overwhelming. Fellow author Adam Fay said it best last year when, in his piece on Christopher Nolan’s Inception stated, “While there is no doubt that this is a standout film, the over-the-top gushing of praise strikes me to be less about the strength of the actual film and more about the pitiful films it shares multiplex space with.” Such a statement could be applied to many preceding years, but never more pertinent in the light of 2010’s bucket of trash. The Best It’s a short list, this one.
