Belo Monte Dam Threatens Brazilian Amazon (PHOTOS) From Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier: It is a bitter loss. The wild river that along its lengthy journey gives life to so much and so many will be tamed forever. Where I stand on the shores of the Xingu River, just a few miles from the city of Altamira, I can see the markers where the main wall of the Belo Monte dam will be built. Across the main waterway of the Xingu, 14 meters (or 46 feet) high, the dam will muzzle the flow of the river and will create a gigantic lake almost 600 square kilometers in size. When the city of New Orleans, which is roughly that size, was flooded after hurricane Katrina, the entire world shrieked in horror.

Holiday Rentals - AJEM 142 Easter Road Listing Summary Listing No:207 Sleeps up to:6 Bracket Time for Climate {Treaty}{Pact} - Dot Earth Blog [UPDATE, 8/17: Yvo de Boer, who runs the office administering climate negotiations, says a week of talks in Bonn did little to reduce the thickets of brackets still clogging negotiating texts.] It’s bracket time in climate talks. The United Nations office that manages negotiations aimed at generating a new global climate agreement this December in Copenhagen has released a basic 53-page outline for 192 countries to supplement or whittle when the next round of talks begins in June in Bonn. The draft text was shaped by rounds of comments and reams of proposed language submitted this spring by parties to the original climate treaty, the Framework Convention on Climate Change, which underpins everything from the Kyoto Protocol to whatever comes next in Denmark.

The Delayers When, years from now, the errors and follies of the economics profession are disdainfully listed, the object of greatest derision will not be the finance theorists for whom efficient and complete markets were as real as "actually existing socialism" was to fanatics of a different stripe; it will not be regulators who thought regulation was uncool. No, the biggest failure of economics in these two decades will have been on climate change. After all, we economists may already have screwed up the planet beyond repair. The Kyoto agreement, fashionable now to deride, was nevertheless the best hope to move the United States' emissions to a permanently lower level; but a well-publicised revolt by Bill Clinton's economists, who claimed the benefits would not outweigh the costs, effectively stalled its ratification. That's a phrase that economists use often: the balancing of benefits and costs. On almost every occasion, it is useful.

Dammed Reporter: Allison Langdon Producers: Stephen Rice, Julia Timms, Jo Townsend There are few places on Earth quite as isolated or as spectacular as the Amazon. Venture deep into its heart and you enter a world completely untouched by the 21st century, where people live as they have done for thousands of years, surviving on the bounty of South America's mightiest river. But their simple life is under threat. Reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries SBSTA 38 continued its consideration of methodological guidance for activities relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries. (Refer to the conclusions of this agenda item contained in FCCC/SBSTA/2013/L.12 and Annexes I and II). At this session, the SBSTA completed its work on several matters related to the work programme referred to in decision 1/CP.16, appendix II and to decision 12/CP.17, paragraph 5. It decided to recommend draft decisions on the following matters for adoption by the COP at its nineteenth session:

Can India win if it loses the climate battle? - 30 Oct 2009 {*style: Malini Mehra and Bittu Sahgal *} In recent months, India has sought to challenge its image overseas, and in growing quarters at home, as recalcitrant and obstructionist on climate change. In a showdown this week with the old guard, the reformist environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, had to tone down his climate advice to India’s Prime Minister, Dr. Threats and Solutions Background - May 13, 2009 Fifteen percent of the Amazon rainforest has already been destroyed. Between 2000 and 2007, the Brazilian Amazon was deforested at an average rate of over 19,000 km² per year, an area larger than Greece. A significant part of what remains is under direct threat - as are the forest plants, animals and people who depend upon the forest.

REDD Web Platform Welcome to the REDD information sharing web platform. The COP has invited Parties, relevant organizations and stakeholders to support ongoing efforts, capacity building, demonstration activities and mobilization of resources relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries and to share the outcomes of these efforts with the SBSTA by providing corresponding information to the secretariat. In decision 2/CP.13 the COP also requested the secretariat to develop a web platform where this information will be made available. The information shared on this web platform can be accessed through three entry points: Parties, relevant organizations and stakeholders are encouraged to submit information relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) to this web platform.
