The Xi'an Incident, as it became known, held the leadership of China hanging in the balance for a couple of tension-wracked weeks. An intriguing sequence of events brought on the kidnapping and its solution. In 1936, while Hitler marched in Europe, the Japanese army was steadily tightening its grip on China. Chiang knew that a head-on conflict with the Japanese army would, if not demolish him, at least weaken his position, and make him vulnerable to the communists. But for Zhang Xueliang, one of Chiang's allied generals, this policy of footdragging against the Japanese was unacceptable. Zhang saw this as an ideal moment to make a move. Two weeks of tough negotiations followed. In the end, a compromise was reached.

Hotels stayed in: Vala Janu in Borivali, Mumbai; Hotel Umaid Bhavan in Jaipur; Hotel Taj Plaza in Agra; Hotel Welcome Palace in Delhi. I travelled in late April through early May 2009. Mumbai The Vala Janu Hotel is more for the overnight business traveller than tourists. I hit on this tiny budget hotel because it was close to the homes of family members. Mumbai has improved since our last visit 9 years ago but not to the extent that you can visibly see the changes unless you look for them. By happysnapper999 We did find the time to take a long bus ride for photo ops and strolled along the Colaba Causeway, also took a peep at the Leopolds restaurant where the Pakistani terrorists’ went haywire shooting at the customers.
