Top 10 augmented reality demos that will revolutionize video games
Augmented Reality (AR) has the potential to do something parents can’t: free gamers from their couches and usher them into the real world, to play. ***UPDATE***if you find this interesting – check out the recent post Top AR Games of All Time. Here is my countdown of the top 10 best AR demos poised to revolutionize video games: 10. When Dr. 9. In 2006 the Come Out & Play Festival turned New York City into a playground for a weekend, then did the same for the city of Amsterdam in 2007. None of the games played in the festival made it to my top ten list – individually. 8. Tobias Lang and Blair MacIntyre (GA Tech) give us an extraordinary glance at what happens when the virtual world “leaks” into the real world. The world is the battlefield, your phone is your weapon. 6. “Magical monsters appear from shadows cast by the hands of participants, reacting to gestures with sound and animation. 5. What if everyone could overlay reality with their own virtual creation? 4. 3. 2. …And the top demo is…

Android app can recognize a person, pull up his status updates Imagine you’re at a conference and want to know something about the people around you. A new mobile application called Recognizr can identify a person’s face via your phone camera and deliver not only profile information about that person but also show you their latest status updates. Swedish computer vision specialists Polar Rose combined forces with interface designers TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) to create the Recognizr as a prototype application for Android phones to show off Polar Rose’s mobile face recognition library. [youtube Since in real life it’s unlikely that you’ll go around taking pictures of random strangers, at least unless you can do so discreetly, I asked Polar Rose CTO Jan-Erik Solem what he sees as the main applications of Recognizr. Recognizr uses FaceLib, a mobile face recognition library from Polar Rose, which is available for Android and iPhone.

Augmented reality: the next generation Mobile augmented reality (AR) was a favorite of the tech press in 2009, a year that saw the unveiling of mobile AR browsers from Wikitude, Layar and Metaio. Now that the dust has settled, let’s take a look at the current state of the technology and where it will go from here. Mobile AR browsers currently work by using a combination of the mobile phone’s camera, compass and GPS data to identify the user’s location and field of view, retrieve data based on the geographical coordinates, and overlay that data over the camera view. Accuracy problems The GPS on a mobile phone normally only gives a position within around 20 meters, while the iPhone’s compass orientation is only accurate to around 20 degrees. In the longer term, the company is working on markerless tracking to improve accuracy in identifying objects. Metaio is partnering with Earthmine, which provides street-level images in which each pixel is mapped to the corresponding 3D coordinate — latitude, longitude and elevation.

Most augmented reality companies not doing augmented reality? Forrester Research just released a new report on mobile augmented reality (AR) that says few companies are delivering “real” augmented reality (AR) today. Augmented reality overlays digital information over your view of the physical world in a mobile device’s camera view, as pictured left. It currently works by using a combination of the mobile phone’s camera, compass, GPS data and other sensors to identify objects in the field of view, retrieve relevant data and overlay that data over the camera view. The Forrester report says that AR requires object recognition on the mobile device itself as well as 3D rendering to superimpose images on the real world and that only a few companies like Metaio and Total Immersion provide this. Forrester also concludes that AR is not yet scalable or mature. Mobile AR will merge with other technologies like location-based services, visual search, image and facial recognition and barcodes, predicts Forrester.
