Gorgeous Garage Conversion By Shed Architects
The appropriately named SHED Architecture and Design has done a lovely garage conversion into a 300 square foot studio apartment in a Seattle backyard. It is hard to call it a renovation, but zoning bylaws would not permit a new building, so they appear to have retained a few sticks. It is another good example of how one can make such a small space not only habitable but lovely to look at. The Architects are quoted in Coolboom: The project began with a 30 square meter single car garage, built in the 1920's, that was in an advanced state of decay and in need of a new foundation. The garage, elevated above a sunken yard on wooden posts was in need of a new foundation. The loft looks tight but cozy. This complex and creative space has places to play and sleep, a lofted bed on top with many shelves, steps, hidden compartments and passages along the way up. The interior design challenge here was a complex one: use a very small amount of existing square footage to create a series of spaces ranging from public to private, interactive to comfortable. In short, there was a need to address a range of childhood needs and desires but with a very limited spatial footprint. The ingenious architectural solution proposed by H2O Architects was to make the child’s area serve not only as an interactive play space with plenty of storage, twists and turns, but to also use this as an opportunity to create a spatial divider within the broader room itself – designed to be a point of interaction but also a division for privacy between the family’s two children.

A local company, Baixa (baixa is Portuguese for downtown), has recently added another downtown nightclub to its roster that already includes the Baixa bar. The new nightclub, Instalação (installation), was designed by José Carlos Cruz Arquitecto, the same team responsible for the design of Baixa bar as well as the Farmacia Lordelo we have featured earlier. The space for Instalação, opened in March, was in essence a long, narrow corridor with two dividing structural arches that support the building itself. From this 250 square-meter (2,690 sq.ft.) space the designers created a golden wire tunnel where the main materials are concrete, brass and polished aluminum. Andy Warhol’s Factory inspired some of the ideas for the smaller VIP room, and Anish Kapoor’s ideas gave suggestions for the beautifully textured concrete ceiling – our favourite part of the entire project. Cool Interior Tree Home: Best Kids Bedroom Design Ever? There are a lot of ways to make a nice bedroom, but for kids there is an element of excitement that is just as important as bedroom size and style. As these pictures illustrate, a cool bedroom for children can be a virtual fantasy world in itself – in this case by making the outdoors the driving interior design idea and central concept of the bedroom space. Complete with climbing ropes, ladders, swings and all kinds of hidden storage spaces, this bedroom brings all of the elements of an outdoor play space inside and makes the room feel like a self-sufficient home at the same time. Though this kind of cool bedroom design for kids can of course be contracted out to someone else like Kidtropolis, it is also perhaps an opportunity for a fun do-it-yourself project that engages children in the activity of designing and building their own space.
