First Night With Google Plus: This is Very Cool I thought I'd type up some notes after an evening of using Google's new social network, Google Plus. This is a really big deal, a super ambitious effort involving scores of engineers over months of near total secrecy. (Though some helpful sources and I scooped the core Circles part of all this three months ago.) The service is really, really well done. Will it be good enough? The fundamental value proposition is around privacy: it's the opposite of Facebook and Twitter's universal broadcast paradigm. Above: Anil Dash on Plus. Google Circles to Challenge Facebook Connect When asked about a Google Plus API, Google's Joseph Smarr said the following tonight on the site itself. That sounds exactly like Facebook Connect, in particular the get up-and-running quickly on a new site part, and makes sense given the degree to which Plus is understood as a challenge to Facebook generally. The list, group or Circle creation interface is interesting and really easy to use. The end result?

ESL-Kids - ESL Flashcards Here you will find a collection of hundreds of flashcards for ESL kids. Each flashcard set has both small (four on one A4 sheet) and large (two on one A4 sheet) versions. There are two copies of each card, one with a word describing the picture, and the other without a description so that you can write your own. This is particularly helpful with differences in American and British English. The flashcards are saved as .pdf files which are opened in your browser with Adobe Acrobat Reader or other PDF reader. Most computers already have this installed but if not, you can download it here for free. Below the vocabulary list for each flashcard theme, there is a 'Single Flashcard Wizard' which you can use to print individual cards instead of a whole set. To get started, choose a flashcard category from the list on the right.

Can Google’s Plus One Take On The Facebook Like? This morning Google announced a social bombshell, a new service called +1 that competes directly with the Facebook like button as a signal for determining what content is most relevant to an individual. Fortunately for Google, it has the world’s largest search engine to integrate this product with immediately, giving publishers a significant reason to implement +1 within their sites. Google accounts for more than 50 percent of incoming traffic on most sites, while Facebook is currently running a distant second in referring traffic (more then 10 percent of our own traffic comes from Facebook). For now, the new product is being offered as an experimental service, although there’s no doubt the company plans on making it a widespread feature. It’s pretty clear that Google wants to become a whole lot more social and in order to get there, they’re going to take a page directly out of Facebook’s playbook.

Understanding the Digital Natives They see life as a game. They enjoy nothing more than outsmarting the system. They don’t trust politicians, medias, nor brands. They see corporations as inefficient and plagued by an outmoded hierarchy. “They”, are the Digital Natives. The French polling institute BVA published an enlightening survey of this generation: between 18-24 years of age, born with a mouse and a keyboard, and now permanently tied to their smartphone. The constant gamer. According to the study, brands face a serious challenge from the Digital Native. Weirdly enough, when I asked Edouard Le Marechal if big ad agencies were flocking to subscribe to his survey, he replied they were not. There are notable exceptions, such as brands that are direct components of the digital sphere. Corporate Defiance. The estrangement toward the corporate community also result from macro-economic considerations. The Group they trust. How do they get the news? Consequently, resources can only be group-related or collectively-driven.

What Early Birds Want to Know About the Real-Time Web The real-time web is a broad and rich phenomenon emerging online. A wide variety of companies are building and using it in really diverse ways. YourVersion offers a real-time discovery engine for finding streams of content about topics you're interested in. Because this field is so new and is seeing such breadth of innovation, people have a lot of questions about it. These are not the kind of questions you can get answers for by having a media pundit interview the CEO of a company on stage. What are your big questions about the real-time web? How do we SWIM in the real time web stream? Last year we happened across one of Kaliya Hamlin's unconference events, spent a couple of hours there and it was an amazing experience. How does one evaluate the credibility of real-time information? How can we make the web real-time while keeping it distributed? How are open standards going to push the real-time web forward? How does it change our relationships? What's it all mean?

Walking Around In Circles: As Google+ Opens Up Will People Start Using It Correctly? Last night, I wrote up my initial thoughts on Google+ after using it for a day. Overall, I find it pretty compelling so far. While there is a bit of a learning curve, after about 15 minutes, I found myself at home using the service. And little things (namely notifications) kept bringing me back. But let’s be realistic, it has only been a day. The new car smell has yet to wear off. Right now, almost every single post I see on Google+ is shared with the Public. But tonight, Google started dishing out invites for early users to spread around as they see fit. By “correct”, I don’t mean to suggest that there is a set way to use Google+. That type of usage doesn’t seem tenable as Google+ gains users. More importantly, that would make Google+ just another slightly different version of Twitter, Facebook, etc. I think Google knows all of this. But as everyone has learned over the years, getting users to create and use groups is hard. Maybe — gasp — the web isn’t meant to mimic the real world.
