Farewell Front Row A quick glance at our home page reveals that this Lion thing is a Big Deal. And when such Big Deals come along, they’re invariably followed by Big Complaints. In the case of Lion, these complaints have focused on the death of PowerPC applications, the lack of a media option for installing Lion, and a new “natural” scrolling default that, to many seasoned Mac users, feels completely unnatural. And yet, there’s been nary a peep about the termination of one of the key features of Apple’s digital hub strategy: Front Row, the media-center-on-the-Mac application that was wildly popular until everyone seemed to forget that it was there. Today, install Lion, mash Command-Escape, and what you get is absolutely nothing. Even the most minor superheroes and unfortunate hamster breeds have their legion of stalwart defenders, so I will be surprised not one smidge if I see comments claiming that Front Row was all that kept some of you from collapsing under this vale of tears.

OS X Lion kills Front Row… here’s how to get it back! As we first reported back in February, OS X Lion brings many new innovations but loses others like Front Row. Front Row, for those unfamiliar, is a full screen media interface for the Mac. Front Row made its debut a couple of major OS X releases back and essentially mirrors the initial Apple TV interface – in its Snow Leopard implementation. Since the news broke that the software is missing from Lion, reader Ralph Perdomo put together a little application to bring back the functionality. Ralph figured out that he could take the Snow Leopard Front Row files and then compile it into a runnable application for OS X Lion. We have tried out the application and the tweak works.

How to install Front Row on Lion (Updated) Update: As several of you have discovered, the latest version of iTunes breaks compatibility with Front Row so that Front Row will no longer see your music. Most unfortunate. Ralph Perdomo reports that he has ported OS X Front Row to Lion by moving several frameworks and the application itself from his old Snow Leopard install. He wrote up the procedure over on his weblog and has provided an optional installer for anyone who didn't keep a Snow Leopard install around. Perdomo reports that the re-installed application seems to work well, and he does not seem to have run into conflicts from what I can tell. /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.RemoteUI.plist /Applications/Front Row.app TUAW has not had a chance to test this hack out, but we applaud Perdomo for his creativity in the face of OS upgrades.

How to Set Up an iTunes Home Server Posted 09/01/2011 at 1:10pm | by Cory Bohon Online music storage is an area that has exploded in recent months, with Amazon, Google and Apple all becoming major players in the game. But what if you'd rather not deal with a third-party and instead host your own music? What You Need: >> A Mac capable of running latest version of iTunes>> Always-on internet connection>> Wired or wireless network>> Existing iTunes Library 1. The first step to setting up your dedicated Mac is to transfer your iTunes library to the machine. Once you have your iTunes library set up, and iTunes running, we need to start making some changes to the way the computer operates. The first changes you’ll want to make is with regards to the power. Next, to ensure that iTunes is always running, even if the computer restarts, right-click on its icon in the Dock and click Options > Open at Login. Now let’s configure the iTunes preferences. 2.
