A Writer’s Guide to Fiction–Types of Fiction, Word Count and Page Count I’ve seen the question come up many times: What’s the difference between a novel, novella and a novelette? The answer in its simplest form is length. However, perhaps the best way to answer this is to break down the types of fiction writing and discuss how publishers look at the importance of appropriate lengths of works. Keep in mind, these are mostly rule-of-thumb guidelines to follow—there are always exceptions. For instance, despite being a Young Adult novel the manuscript of Twilight was some 150K words. The publisher cut it down to 118K words. Here’s a guide to some very basic novel questions, such as the types of fiction, generally accepted word count per genre and how to estimate the page count of your manuscript. TYPES Of FICTION Flash Fiction–Generally 300-1,000 words Flash fiction is extremely brief. Short Story—1,001-7,499 words Intended as a story that can be read in one sitting. Novelette–7,500-20,000 words Novella–20,000-50,000 words Novel–50,000-110,000 words Like this:

Personal essays by popular authors and novices alike are relatable, engrossing reads. Sometimes, their heart-wrenching reflections stay with you for days. For reporters or academics, it can be hard to step back from research rituals and write from personal experience. But a personal essay can endear you to an audience, bring attention to an issue, or simply provide comfort to a reader who’s “been there.” “Writing nonfiction is not about telling your story,” says Ashley C. But don’t worry if your life doesn’t seem exciting or heart-wrenching enough to expound upon; think of it as writing through yourself, instead of about yourself. Where to submit your personal essays Once you’ve penned your essay, which publications should you contact? “Submit to the places you love that publish work like yours,” Ford advises, but don’t get caught up in the size of the publication. 1. 2. 3. Best Free Content Curation Tools 2012 Content Curation has been on the upside lately, and while there are some who don’t think that it is an ethical form of “content creation”, there are those that think completely the opposite. Whichever side you choose to be, you should know that if you do decide to “curate content”, to always give credit to its original source and never copy an entire article even if you are linking back to its original author. That does not have anything to do with curation and may even be considered as stealing content. While I am at it, creating a list of useless links is also not regarded as curating content. Which side are you on? Do you favor “content curation” as an interesting approach of content creation/marketing, or are you totally against it? Curating content done properly, IMO has its positives. Be the best curator of meaningful contentFind the best information that others have written and posted online—the best articles, charts, tables, infographics, videos, or pictures. That’s it!
