They remind me of what I love about both Tunng and the quieter moments from Blitzen Trapper, without sounding like either of those bands. Listen: Horses 2) Cough Cool, Clausen Despite being named after a Misfits song (they do an excellent cover of “Some Kinda Hate”), Cough Cool generally sounds nothing like the New Jersey hardcore pioneers. EMusicTips - StumbleUpon Clear Your Cover Songs and Get a Mechanical License | Clear Cover Songs! Clear Your Cover Songs and Get a Mechanical License It’s not that complicated to take care of the legalities needed to record a cover song on a commercial album . The simple truth is, if you record a cover song on an album, you first need to cite the original artists as the writers of the song. This can be done in the liner notes. Once this is done, there are only a few other legalities needed to be allowed to legally sell the album. Artists sometimes get confused because song owners and their clearing houses often negotiate a mechanical license on the same terms and the same rate as a compulsory license. The entire process is quite easy because Limelight knows the simple structure that is already in place to guarantee that people follow the rules to obtain their license. I imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances, at one end of this trench. I also imagine a faceless industry lackey at the other end holding a fountain pen and a contract waiting to be signed. Nobody can see what's printed on the contract. Every major label involved in the hunt for new bands now has on staff a high-profile point man, an "A&R" rep who can present a comfortable face to any prospective band. Lyle Preslar, former guitarist for Minor Threat, is one of them. These A&R guys are not allowed to write contracts. One of my favorite bands was held hostage for the better part of two years by a slick young "He's not like a label guy at all," A&R rep, on the basis of such a deal memo. There's this band...
