Within this context Templestowe College's (TC) student population had fallen from 1000 to fewer than 300 students. With only 23 Year 7 students, this Australian public school was under a real threat of closure only a decade ago. They needed to find a way to engage students and staff in their education system once more. Now named one of the top 100 most innovative schools in Australia, Templestowe College has revolutionised itself by putting students (and staff) in charge of their own learning. The school’s '“Yes” is the default' policy means that any request or suggestion from a student, parent or staff member has to be answered “Yes” unless it will take too much time, too much money, or has a negative impact on someone else. TC has now grown to over 1000 students each with their own ILP, individualised Learning Plan.

Brain Nook provides students with a series of scenarios that they have to resolve by answering mathematics and language arts questions. Learn Your Tables is a neat little site for students to use to learn and develop multiplication skills. Ten Marks, an online mathematics tutoring service, offers a free program for teachers. Yummy Math is a website designed for the purpose of sharing mathematics problems and scenarios based on things happening in the world today. Web2.0calc is a free online scientific calculator. Math Open Reference is a free online reference for geometry teachers and students. Math Live is a neat mathematics website developed by Learn Alberta.

We need motivated, properly trained, well-equipped science teachers to prepare and inspire the next generation of scientists. Engineering and technology are growing industries so it is necessary to inspire and prepare young people to work in STEM industries or to help them discover their talents for these areas. Scientix gives teachers an easy-to-use online portal, which has inputs from experts in specific subjects, so they can teach their students the most up-to-date ideas and work in their chosen field. By showing students how the subjects they are studying can be applied in real life and the usefulness of what they are learning, it increases students' personal motivation and engagement in class. In its first phase, the project built an online portal to collect and present European STEM education projects and their results, and organised several teacher workshops.
