While there are still large gaps, a very substantial body of "Western" thought is available in the form of downloadable or on-line books. Most major writers, from Plato to Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Proust, or John Le Carre, are accessible on the Internet. Q: It's nice to save students money, but my students truly need print books. Doesn't that mean I need to stick with traditional textbook publishers? A: There is always a print option for OER. Sometimes the OER platform itself will offer a printed and bound textbook which can be ordered directly from the website, or purchase can be brokered through the Kirkwood Bookstore, as a traditional textbook would be. If a printed copy isn't available, or if you are using your own compilation of OER (and/or some copyrighted materials that you've determined fall under fair use), the Kirkwood Bookstore will work with you to create a course pack for your students to purchase at the Bookstore, again, at a substantially lower cost than a traditional textbook. Q: I understand that textbooks can be very expensive, but I don't want to take business away from our bookstore. These resources are created by groups of content and teaching experts, including university faculty, district and school specialists, teachers, and The Utah State Board of Education staff. OER Web Collections Science New Science OER textbooks are now available for K-5 and 9-12 and align to the new Science with Engineering Education Standards. The Utah Science Open Educational Resources (OER) textbook project was started to bring Utah teachers together to create a resource that aligns to Utah core science standards. The OER textbooks are available in digital formats for free under a creative commons license. O'Reilly Open Books Project
O'Reilly has published a number of Open Books--books with various forms of "open" copyright--over the years. The reasons for "opening" copyright, as well as the specific license agreements under which they are opened, are as varied as our authors. Perhaps a book was outdated enough to be put out of print, yet some people still needed the information it covered. Or the author or subject of a book felt strongly that it should be published under a particular open copyright. Maybe the book was written collectively by a particular community, as in the case of our Community Press books. But there's more to making Open Books available online than simply adopting an open license or giving up rights granted under copyright law. We're happy to have partnered with two innovative nonprofits, Creative Commons and the Internet Archive, to solve the licensing and digitizing challenges involved in bringing Open Books to readers.
