Stratégie numérique: valoriser les données des administrations publiques European Commission - Press release Digital Agenda: Turning government data into gold Brussels, 12 December 2011 – The Commission has launched an Open Data Strategy for Europe, which is expected to deliver a €40 billion boost to the EU's economy each year. Europe’s public administrations are sitting on a goldmine of unrealised economic potential: the large volumes of information collected by numerous public authorities and services. Member States such as the United Kingdom and France are already demonstrating this value. These actions position the EU as the global leader in the re-use of public sector information. Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said: "We are sending a strong signal to administrations today. The Commission proposes to update the 2003 Directive on the re-use of public sector information by: Making it compulsory to provide data in commonly-used, machine-readable formats, to ensure data can be effectively re-used. Last year, at the 2010 Summit, I shared with you my ideas on interoperability and standards, and listed some key actions to put in place. Well, we have achieved a lot, but we haven't achieved everything: so here I am! Of course I am eager to tell you today what we've done since last year and so I will start with that. Ladies and Gentlemen, In all sectors, standards and standardisation drive competitiveness, promote innovation, and benefit consumers through competition. Remember that the ICT revolution would not be what it is without the standards and protocols which underpin the Internet. And we in Europe are now one huge step closer to better standards. This call for proposals will provide a financial support to innovative mobile applications or services based on public data sets made available by European public entities. Projects submitted to the call for proposals should be related to transportation, culture, tourism and the environment. Eligible applicants will be companies, associations, public institutions or territorial communities with registered offices in the European Union.
