Common Themes in Literture

Common Themes in Literture
Common Themes in Literature It has been argued that there are anywhere between 3 and 40 main themes in literature that continue to be explored by each successive generation of writers. No one knows for what the real number is--it depends on who you ask--but below is a list, not necessarily inclusive, of the most common ones. There are many variations, and there are often overlaps as well. So, right or wrong, in no particular order, here they are. The Great Journey This follows a character or characters through a series of episodic adventures as they travel. Loss of Innocence Sometimes called the "coming of age story," this most commonly introduces an “innocent” character to the evil or complexity of the real/adult world. The Noble Sacrifice The sacrifice can be for any reason except self--a loved one, an enemy, a group of people, the whole of humanity, a dog--but the bottom line is that the protagonist sacrifices himself or herself in an effort to save others. Moon - Carol Bere : Ted Hughes's Birthday Letters [originally published in The Literary Review, Vol. 41, No. 4 (Summer 1998): pp. 556-561] © Carol Bere, 1998 -2014 The publication earlier this year of Birthday Letters, Ted Hughes's powerful, intimate sequence of poems about his relationship with his late wife Sylvia Plath, caught the literary world off-guard. After thirty-five years of aggressive silence regarding their relationship, Hughes essentially tossed a grenade into received Hughes/Plath mythology, refused all interviews, and let the chips fall where they may. 25 Ways To Fuck With Your Characters As storyteller, you are god. And to be frank, you’re not a particularly nice god — at least, not if you want your story to resonate with readers. A good storyteller is a crass and callous deity who treats the characters under his watchful eye like a series of troubled butt-puppets. From this essential conflict — storyteller versus character — a story is born. (After all, that’s what a plot truly is: a character who strives to get above all the shit the storyteller dumps on his fool head.) Put differently, as a storyteller it’s your job to be a dick.

10 Reading Exercises for Fiction Writers I always find it exciting when I discover a book that in some way echoes whatever I happen to be writing at the time. After reading several duds recently, I finally came across such a book–The China Garden by Kristina Olsson. To do this Polti analyzed classical Greek texts, plus classical and contemporaneous French works. He also analyzed a handful of non-French authors.
