Has anyone tried it? Are the programs comparable? (URL for VUE: ) Posted by HughSep 26, 2010 at 08:09 PM I own a Tinderbox licence, but have only become aware of VUE in recent weeks and have just had another look at its website. I would say that both applications are similar to the extent that both deal with notes and the visual representation of those notes and the links between them, but that appears to be as far as it goes. But on the basis of a quick skim of VUE, I’d say Tbx is much the more sophisticated, versatile and useful product. (Of course, Eastgate have said that they’re working on a Windows edition, but they’ve said that for quite some time.) While this fascinating interview doesn't specifically mention mind mapping, the principles of visual thinking that it highlights do have relevance to mind mapping: "We're approaching a perfect storm of information complexity. The only possible way to deal with it is for us to become much more visual in the way we do business. "On the information complexity side, visual thinking provides us an incredibly powerful set of tools for looking at complex sets of data... "Visual thinking is the universal problem-solving tool kit." I love the concept of "visual triage."

Review of VUE | I used to be undecided, but now I'm not so sure. VUE stands for Visual Understanding Environment. This program comes from Tufts University in the USA. It was written to allow students to take notes during lectures and to make presentations. The program stores its maps in disk files which have to be saved manually. I have not used VUE as a presentation tool and so maybe I have a biased opinion. VUE is a very extensive tool with a lot of facilities which are only briefly covered in this review, fortunately you can try it for free, if you don’t like it you haven’t lost anything. Overall score = 26 out of 50 1. The user places nodes on the map in the position they want and makes the connections they want. You could produce organisation charts, family trees and process flow diagrams with VUE as the layout is entirely up to the user but there are no tools aimed specifically at these types of diagrams. VUE: mind mapping meets data visualization, semantic analysis, and presentation engine VUE (Visual Understanding Environment) is a free, open source mind mapping and data visualization software developed by the Academic Technology group at Tufts University in Boston. VUE is unique in that it offers a range of innovative functions such as tagging of nodes and of relationships, support for images, videos, and other objects within the mind map structure, and the ability to import and analyze datasets (from CSV files, XML files, and even RSS feeds) using semantic mapping. It also functions as an innovative Powerpoint-style presentation tool, allowing users to define “presentation pathways” on top of the mind map structure, and to create presentation-style content that is associated with the mapped concepts. VUE can also be used in conjunction with the Zotero Firefox extension to map out and visualize online documents and web clippings. VUE is also a full-fledged, Powerpoint-style presentation software.
