Will Dropouts Save America? Michael Ellsberg is the author of “The Education of Millionaires: It’s Not What You Think and It’s Not Too Late.” I TYPED these words on a computer designed by Apple, co-founded by the college dropout Steve Jobs. The program I used to write it was created by Microsoft, started by the college dropouts Bill Gates and Paul Allen.

SEO Quality Score There has been a lot of talk in 2011 about the changes at Google, which we all refer to as Panda. That Panda caused quite a stir in the SEO community and everybody seemed to have an opinion, or a horror story of the “Panda attacking them”. In this post I’ll explain some new things I’ve learned about Google and what they’re looking for and also reinforce a few things I’ve mentioned in webinars I’ve done recently on this topic. Give Google What They Want I think the key underlying theme, is to give Google what they want and don’t try to trick Google, well not too much anyway! iPad app developer Thomas Suarez aged TWELVE gives amazing talk at TEDxManhattanBeach By Jennifer Madison Updated: 13:28 GMT, 15 November 2011 He's only in sixth grade, but already Thomas Suarez has quite the impressive resume for a rising tech star. Rethinking the Way College Students Are Taught It's a typical scene: a few minutes before 11:00 on a Tuesday morning and about 200 sleepy-looking college students are taking their seats in a large lecture hall - chatting, laughing, calling out to each other across the aisles. Class begins with a big "shhhh" from the instructor. This is an introductory chemistry class at a state university. For the next hour and 15 minutes, the instructor will lecture and the students will take notes.

Google+ isn’t a social network: it’s a web spider hungry for your data So if Google+ is not about “getting people together on one site and calling it a social network”, as Arora says, what is it then? One delegate at the glamourous conference told me she felt disconcerted after hearing Arora’s admission. “Basically what he [Arora] has just admitted is that Google+ is just a big spider, which links all of the company’s products together for the first time, encouraging people to have a Google web profile, which will supply it with an incredible amount of personal data. This is a far reaching spider too.

3 Awesome Teen Entrepreneurs Who Will Put You to Shame The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship honored 33 enterprising teen entrepreneurs this week at its first annual Dare to Dream awards dinner in New York City. The kids, jittery and dressed in their best, came from all over the world—Colombia, China, Germany, and around the United States—to receive the awards and share their businesses with fellow honorees. They were selected as stand-out entrepreneurs by NFTE, a non-profit organization that teaches low-income students entrepreneurial skills. It operates local chapters in 50 countries. Before the fancy dinner, hosted by MSBC anchor Willie Geist and FUBU founder Daymond John, the kids set up science fair-style booths showing off their businesses.

Resurrect computer science – but don't kill off ICT Michael Gove recently labelled the current provision of ICT in English schools as "dull' and argued, schools should have the freedom to teach computer science. The education secretary's speech came after a Royal Society report which mentioned that computing science is seen as a subject about basic digital literacy skills such as how to use a word-processor or a database. Much is wrong with ICT lessons in schools. This is beyond doubt. The subject is taught predominantly by non-specialists and involves the mastery of skills required in the 1990s (when the programme of study was originally put together). This was a world before broadband, social networks, tablets and smartphones.

The Problem with Lecturing Back in the late 1970s a colleague came to David Hestenes with a problem. The two of them were physics professors at Arizona State University. Hestenes was teaching mostly graduate students, but his colleague was teaching introductory physics, and the students in his classes were not doing well. Semester after semester, the class average on his exams never got above about 40 percent. "And I noted that the reason for that was that his examination questions were mostly qualitative, requiring understanding of the concepts," says Hestenes. Most professors didn't test for this kind of understanding; students just had to solve problems to pass the exams.

Tips for Successful Social Media Integration While much has been written about the many different ways to effectively float your message and brand across the social media space, little is being offered about the functionality of design in social media integration. With that in mind, I’ve compiled some thoughts on how to increase your return on investment when designing and configuring social media sharing buttons. A few best practices to always consider: Do NOT use social media icons to simply link out to profiles.
