This week: DJ Chuck P, of KCRW, whom you can join on his continuous search for what’s next on KCRW’s Music Blog. 1) High Highs, High Highs High Highs, from Brooklyn by way of Sydney, make music that’s light, airy, and easy to listen to. They remind me of what I love about both Tunng and the quieter moments from Blitzen Trapper, without sounding like either of those bands. Listen: Horses 2) Cough Cool, Clausen Despite being named after a Misfits song (they do an excellent cover of “Some Kinda Hate”), Cough Cool generally sounds nothing like the New Jersey hardcore pioneers. Listen: Suckers 3) Gauntlet Hair, Gauntlet Hair Tropicalia meets Animal Collective. Listen: Top Bunk 4) Zola Jesus, Conatus Zola Jesus (Nika Roza Danilova) puts her best instrument up front: her voice. Listen: Seekir 5) Yellow Ostrich, The Mistress Listen: Whale

How to Become a Music Mogul in 3 Easy Steps October 1, 2009 12:00 AM 1. The Setup 30 Books I’m Glad I Read Before 30 In various ways, these 30 books convey some of the philosophy of how Angel and I live our lives. I honestly credit a fraction of who I am today to each title. Thus, they have indirectly influenced much of what I write about on this site. A medley of both fiction and nonfiction, these great reads challenged my internal status quo, opening my mind to new ideas and opportunities, and together they gave me a basic framework for living, loving, learning and working successfully. If you haven’t read these books yet, I highly recommend doing so.

Dude Stops People Wearing Headphones To Ask What They’re Listening To (London Edition) Inspired by Tyler Cullen, a student at School of Visual Arts in New York City who went up to random people in Manhattan and asked them what they were listening to on their headphones, Joseph Jenson and Michael Fostiropoulos have applied the concept to London. Now, the natural question: from this random sample, who has better taste in music? London or New York? Here are the respective playlists: Top 10 Intellectual Rappers Music Despite being in the mainstream consciousness for over twenty years now, Hip-Hop is still largely thought to consist solely of idiotic, crude and often pointlessly violent lyrics that debase and malign the English language. Although to be fair, that is still the majority of the Hip-Hop music being shoved down our throats by the big music labels and radio.

The Ten Best Horror Movies You Haven’t Seen October means Halloween, and Halloween means horror, and horror? Well that means some damn good movies. I presume many of you are searching for a good horror flick to curl up with this month, and while I will advise you to first consult my 10 Best Horror Films of Decade list, I thought I’d compile a new one made up of films that aren’t quite as widely known. Yes, I love The Ring, The Orphanage and The Descent, but there are smaller, more niche movies that are deserving of your attention, and really, once you’ve been scared or grossed out once, it’s not quite the same if you watch the same film again. Here are some new titles that some of you may have seen, but I predict most of you will have not. You may think a few of them suck, and I’ll admit they’re not without their flaws, but if you’re looking for a few decent horror films, you could do a lot worse than these.

The Problem With Music Whenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up thinking of them in a particular context. I imagine a trench, about four feet wide and five feet deep, maybe sixty yards long, filled with runny, decaying shit. I imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances, at one end of this trench.
