High Line Promenade The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It is owned by the City of New York, and maintained and operated by Friends of the High Line. Founded in 1999 by community residents, Friends of the High Line fought for the High Line’s preservation and transformation at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. Long de 1 825 mètres, il a été ouvert à la circulation le , après 14 ans de travaux. Pendant cette seule journée 1 800 véhicules et 150 300 personnes l'ont emprunté. Le pont a coûté 18 millions de dollars de l'époque et on estime que 27 personnes ont trouvé la mort pendant les travaux. Histoire[modifier | modifier le code] Quand il fut achevé, le profil aérodynamique du pont n'avait pas encore été mis à l'épreuve. En 1884, Phineas Taylor Barnum démontra la fiabilité du pont (tout en faisant de la publicité pour son célèbre cirque), en y faisant défiler les 21 éléphants de son cirque. De nos jours, la circulation se fait sur deux niveaux : l'un pour les véhicules à moteur et l'autre pour les cyclistes et piétons. Émile Renouf est l'un des premiers à avoir pris le pont de Brooklyn pour sujet d'une peinture en 1891[1],[2]
