How to Use the iPhone as a Photography Tool Got an iPhone? Check out how Chris Folsom from studiotempura.com uses his as a tool in his photography. Image by Lawrence OP There has been a lot of buzz around the iPhone lately, especially among photographers. And for good reason… the iPhone has a host of photography-related tools that are both fun and useful. I find myself using it more and more lately, so I thought I might share some of those functions with you. Using the Camera The most obvious photography-related feature is the camera. One of my favorite ways to take photos with the iPhone is using an app called Pano . Granted, this is probably not something I would print and hang on my wall… there are a few areas where the stitching didn’t quite line up correctly and the noise levels are higher than I would prefer. Beyond panoramas, the iPhone is capable of shooting a variety of other styles on the fly including tilt-shift fakes , fisheye images and night photography . Taking pictures of children? Use the PandaCam app to make them smile. If you're working with models, bring up the iPoseU app for posing inspiration. Still life photographers can take advantage of the A Level app to make sure their images are properly aligned. Among the many worthwhile apps there are a few standouts. Geotag your photos There are many gadgets on the market to help photographers add geotagging information to their photos. Turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a remote Having one eye glued to a viewfinder can stifle your creativity. Predict natural light If you’re planning to shoot outdoors, or indoors using natural light, you’ll need to know exactly what nature plans to offer up. Here's What I Did After receiving a few emails from illustrators and friends asking what kind of things I did to get my recent assignments I've decided to make a blog post on the subject. I still find it very useful to read how other illustrators promote themselves or what steps they took to go from unknown to getting their foot in the door, so just thought I'd add my own story here from start to finish. In the beginning I was terrible, and I knew it. I had been trained as a fine art painter and knew how to paint what was in front of me. Painting from the imagination is a whole different ball game. I also knew next to nothing about composition. So...I practiced---a lot! I went to the library constantly, checking out tons of books by my favorite illustrators for both inspiration and to learn from them. When I started sending my own stuff out, I got lots of rejections and only a couple notes saying they kept my work on file. Finally, my illustrations started to improve. Still....nothing tradebook-like.

So, to get your Google SketchUp 3D objects into AE, you'll need Photoshop Extended. In Sketchup, go to File > Export > 3D model. Choose Collada (DAE), since that works nicely with Photoshop CS4 Extended (some Sketchup features may be lost in the export, though). Open the DAE file in Photoshop CS4 Extended and save it as a PSD file. Import that PSD file into AE as Composition or Composition - Cropped Layers. Note that this doesn't actually bring 3D geometry into AE and also that these 3D models won't intersect AE's own 3D layers in 3D space.. More info in the After Effects Help page on 3D object layers from Photoshop.
