générique de films The main-on-end titles for Charles de Lauzirika’s psychological noir Crave take what is at root a basic child’s toy to grim extremes. Wind-driven, humanoid whirligigs are torn apart and re-purposed into disturbing wooden mechanisms acting out vigilante fantasies from the film — images from a nightmare. The angular type stands out from the grit and grain as the camera transitions from grisly scene to grisly scene, each segment part of a larger, interconnected machine which could only be stopped by its own friction. Director CHARLES DE LAUZIRIKA and main title designer RALEIGH STEWART discuss the creation of the sequence with us. Can you give us a little background on yourselves? CL: I was born and raised in LA and I was obsessed with cinema. Over the following years, I produced behind-the-scenes content for DVDs and formed my own company, Lauzirika Motion Picture Company. RS: I’m a graphic artist originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. How did you come to work with Raleigh? RS: Yeah.

Experiments: Hot Slots The thrill of casino culture is carried by more than just the chance to win big – an assault on the senses, driven by kaleidoscopic colors, lights blinking at speed, and an auditory collision of sounds. In an alternate universe where money loses all value in the pursuit of a sudden fortune, the instant dopamine lift of the casino invites us to disconnect from our realities, and enter a place where anything is possible. Visualizing the multi-sensory immersion of the casino environment, filmmaker Erren Franklin journeys deep into the heart of Las Vegas at 2am in Hot Slots. Shot on Super 8, the experimental film achieves all its effects in analog, layering filters and in-camera film techniques to recreate the sense of over-stimulation felt among the bright lights. “When you shoot film, you press it against the world and it makes an imprint of the present.

Demonstrating the dark side of advertising, whereby environmentalism can be assumed by consumers through manipulated language and visual cues, we see alignment with good causes insinuated for capitalist purposes over the drive to make positive change. A satirical look at greenwashing and the way in which it informs current advertising techniques, Italian filmmaker Alice Fassi directs Choco Hoax. Centering the promotion of an imagined futuristic snack – a brand-new chocolate bar that lacks even chocolate itself – the short fashion film reflects on deceptive product labelling and the image it intends to imitate, stripping away associations with contested ingredients while washing over the harmful characteristics that remain.

Gabby Young and Other Animal - The Band Called Out For More Designed by Andy Hau, United Kingdom. Gabby Young and Other Animals are an eccentric eight piece British pop band, bringing together gypsy, folk, rock and jazz. In 2012, I was asked to be the Art Director and Packaging Designer for their new album “The Band Called Out for More”. Using the kaleidoscope to represent Gabby Young’s unusual, dynamic and colourful persona that explodes through her music, we developed an octagonal packaging that opens and releases the CD in a revolving, spiral fashion. Due to the success of the standard edition, I was further commissioned to develop a special boxset which takes the idea of an ever-changing kaleidoscope further. Based on 3 different “modes” (Butterflies, Album Name, Photos), the kaleidoscope front cover revolves around to reveal 14 different variations, allowing the front cover to match whatever mood the user takes.
