A Perilous Hobby: Vertical Camping Next time you’re passing by a cliff and happen to see a precariously hanging tent with campers inside, don’t be alarmed, it’s just a portable ledge (portaledge): Portaledges — or deployable hanging tents — might seem like a thrill-seeking activity (and it can be), but the idea has actually been around since the 1950s. During this time, rock climbers began to stay overnight on the mountains they were scaling and started looking for convenient niches in the mountain side to make their bed. The first portaledges were used in Yosemite National Park and were non-collapsible cots or hammocks.

A 102-Year-Old Transport Ship Sprouts a Floating Forest Bruce Hood Bruce Hood Andy Brill Stephane & Eva Homebush Bay in Sydney, Australia is home to the remnants of a ship-breaking yard that operated during the mid 20th-century. One such ship was the SS Ayrfield, a 1,140-tonne behemoth built in 1911 as a steam collier that was later used during WWII as a transport ship. From 2008-2010 a concerted effort was made to remove many of the lingering chemicals in Homebush left from the industrial era. A huge thanks to Bruce Hood, Andy Brill and Stephane & Eva for providing photos for this post.

Growing Your Own Garlic - Planting Growing Harvesting and Storing Garlic As far as I'm concerned, garlic gets the blue ribbon for growing your own. It's absurdly easy to plant and care for; it tastes great; it looks beautiful and it takes up so little ground that even those with very small gardens can raise enough to be self-sufficient in garlic for a good part of the year. All you have to do is choose the right varieties; plant at the right time, in the right soil; then harvest when just right and store correctly. 1. If you look in a specialist catalog like the one at Gourmet Garlic Gardens, you'll find dozens of varieties of garlic listed. You see where this is going – and you can see a lot more types of garlic on either of those websites, but for general purposes the most important difference is the one between softneck and hardneck. Softnecks are so called because the whole green plant dies down to pliancy, leaving nothing but the bulb and flexible stems that are easy to braid. Gardeners in most of the U.S. can try some of both. 2. 3. 1. 2. 4. 5. 6.

The Lost Principles of Design In the instant age that design has evolved into recently many of us often stray away from the basics. If you had a professor in college who taught you the fundamentals of design these may be engrained into your head. For the self-taught, you may have a book on your desk with these very principles. However, the more and more people that flood the internet for design content need to learn the basics before trying to make a stellar gradient in Photoshop. While this is cool and amazing right now, there will come a point where this style is strayed away from and a new style is made. Balance Arranging parts to achieve a state of equilibrium between forces of influences. Examples: Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Radial Contrast Interaction of contradictory elements. Examples: Large & Small, rough & smooth, thick & thin, light & dark, organic & geometric Emphasis & Subordination Establishing centers of interest which focus the viewer’s attention. Canoe & Kayak Magazine | Kayak Reviews, Paddling Trips, Industry News, Gear Reviews, Techniques, Photos The Definitive Color Wheel Selecting a color has not always been something that was achieved with just a few clicks. Color had to be collected from pigments of the earth and then dyed into fabric. You had to collect the berries to make the purple-ish/reds or dirt to get a brown. Color, binds the creative realm together be it graphic design, photography, interior design, textile design, transportation design etc. Do you just start picking colors and hope for the best or is there more science at work? Primary Colors Primary colors are the basis of the color spectrum. Secondary Colors Secondary colors are made by mixing two primary colors together. Tertiary Colors The colors in-between the secondary & primary colors are what make up the tertiary colors. Monochromatic Colors Monochromatic color schemes use a single hue (green above) and then use various tints and shades of that original color. Analogous Colors Analogous colors are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Clash Split Complementary Neutral Tertiary Triad

Heartbreaking Photos of Animals Stuck in Zoos While zoos are a great place to see a large number of animals all in one place, there's a dark side to these family attractions that doesn't often get discussed. On Debate.org , the question, "Should we keep animals in zoos?" splits poll takers down the middle with 42% saying yes, saying its especially beneficial for endangered species, and 58% saying no, that animals need to be free and in the wild. What's your opinion? After seeing this series, called Modern Wilderness , by photographer Daniel Zakharov, one's heart can't help but feel incredibly heavy about these animals' doomed destinies. He goes on, "Nowadays animals are born in captivity, between concrete, tiling, cement-slab buildings and artificial landscapes instead of the endless stretch of nature. Daniel Zakharov's website
