Apps in Education Pecha Kucha in PDHPE – Part #1 « Clarinda's Connected Contemplations The Pecha Kucha concept is one which I have been keen to explore more and experiment with at school. So the opportunity has presented itself with a short theory unit in one of our elective classes. Year 9 Physical Activity and Sport Studies (PASS) will be spending their next three theory lessons (one per fortnight) developing a Pecha Kucha presentation about the areas of the topic, Foundations of Physical Activity, which interest them the most. They will present them to the class in our final lesson of the term. First hurdle – explaining the concept wasn’t easy. The Pecha Kucha site is clear and succinct but my students often respond well to video explanations and many of the videos out there, ironically, were a little long-winded. So now students have the concept and have a broad topic area to work within. - Pecha Kucha presentation may be developed individually or in pairs - At least TWO different areas of the topic are to be covered - A soundtrack is also encouraged Like this:
Science Education on the Edge · Managing student websites with Pearltrees This is just a quick post to share a neat tool for keeping track of student websites called Pearltrees. I ran across this article recently and thought this might be useful for organizing all of my student sites that I need to keep track of. As I’ve mentioned before on this blog, I keep track of individual student blogs using RSS feeds. But there are many times that I want a simple way to pull up a student website to show to a student, administrator, or parent, and an RSS feed reader is ok, but clunky for that purpose. I’ve bookmarked my student blogs, too, of course, which works but lacks any style or graphic organization. Perhaps all the iOS and app downloading frenzy that went on this week and the resulting extra time spent on the iPad had something to do with it. Their app is simple to use and makes use of a bookmarklet to capture any site you choose.
- To this day I remain a big fan of the overhead projector. I truly believe it was more effective a tool for teaching than the projected Powerpoint slides will ever be. I stood facing the students, watching their expressions, which I could see since the lights were sufficiently bright. I could draw on the screen and change directions as questions arose. In fact I will argue that the ‘golden age of college teaching’ if there was one was stimulated by the addition of the roller to the overhead projector. It’s been downhill ever since, …until this semester. This semester I’ve purchased an iPad2 and a software application called SplashTop Remote Desktop. To reach this new level of teaching nirvana I have found at least two routes (so far): In both cases you could use the resulting system to present with KeyNote® but that would be so 90′s. Lockdown Librarian: Ways to Connect to Your Patrons Now that most of the world is in some sort of lockdown, librarians are finding new and inventive ways to reach out to their patrons. As a school librarian in London, UK, I’ve been keeping busy reaching out to the students that I serve. It’s a bizarre situation that we’re all in but we are all in it together. This form of verification involves some new tools and techniques, and requires a basic understanding of the way networks operate and how people use them. It also requires many of the so-called old school values and techniques that have been around for a while: being skeptical, asking questions, tracking down high quality sources, exercising restraint, collaborating and communicating with team members.
