Homework Help: Science for Kids Science is the study of the world around us. Scientists learn about their subject by observing, describing, and experimenting. There are many subjects and branches of science. Some study outer space like astronomy. Elements & Periodic Table Now we're getting to the heart and soul of the way the Universe works. You know that a generic atom has some protons and neutrons in the nucleus and some electrons zipping around in orbitals. When those pieces start combining in specific numbers, you can build atoms with recognizable traits. If you have eight protons, neutrons and electrons, you will have an oxygen (O) atom. If you have seven protons, neutrons, and electrons, you will have a nitrogen (N) atom.
Molecular Workbench - Database Molecular Workbench offers interactive, visual simulations and activities that have been widely used in science teaching for students of all ages. Our database is designed to provide teachers and students with easy access to our model-based activities. The activities are derived largely, but not entirely, from projects of the Concord Consortium sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The models are primarily of interactions of atoms and molecules, or rule-based genetics. The Integrated Circuit Lists of Nobel Prizes and Laureates The Integrated Circuit Play the Techville Game About the game Integrated circuits, also called "chips", are electronic circuits where all the components (transistors, diodes, resistors and capacitors) has been manufactured in the surface of a thin substrate of semiconductor material.
Bioluminescence in the Gippsland Lakes These pictures of bioluminescence in the Gippsland Lakes in my gallery have proven quite popular, so it seems time to provide a story to accompany them. But this is not a short story, rather a convoluted one of fires and floods, of microscopic algae and the inspiring, remarkable and surprising beauty of nature. The story begins with alpine bushfires in Victoria, which started on 1st December 2006 when over 70 fires were started by a band of thunderstorms and lightning strikes which moved across the state. This was an early start to the fire season following an extremely dry autumn and several years of drought conditions before that. The fires were in remote, rugged alpine areas, which combined with bone dry forest fuels to make them very hard to control. The fires burnt for 69 days, merging to become the ‘Great Divide Complex’ and ultimately covering an area of well over a million hectares.
Four New Elements Added To The Periodic Table Enlarge The periodic table of the elements Scientists just filled in a few gaps in the periodic table of elements. Elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117, and 118 have been added to the periodic table. The new elements were added after the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) reviewed scientific studies published by teams of researchers in the United States, Japan, and Russia. Liquid Crystals Lists of Nobel Prizes and Laureates Liquid Crystals Play the Crystallite Game Play the Mainstream Game About the game A liquid crystal is a substance that flows like a liquid but maintains some of the ordered structure characteristic of crystals. Under certain circumstances, phases, liquid crystals have a liquid-like behaviour and during others they have the opposite behaviour.
Newton's Laws of Motion The motion of an aircraft through the air can be explained and described by physical principals discovered over 300 years ago by Sir Isaac Newton. Newton worked in many areas of mathematics and physics. He developed the theories of gravitation in 1666, when he was only 23 years old. Some twenty years later, in 1686, he presented his three laws of motion in the "Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis." The laws are shown above, and the application of these laws to aerodynamics are given on separate slides.
The Secret Language of Plants Up in the northern Sierra Nevada, the ecologist Richard Karban is trying to learn an alien language. The sagebrush plants that dot these slopes speak to one another, using words no human knows. Karban, who teaches at the University of California, Davis, is listening in, and he’s beginning to understand what they say. The evidence for plant communication is only a few decades old, but in that short time it has leapfrogged from electrifying discovery to decisive debunking to resurrection. Two studies published in 1983 demonstrated that willow trees, poplars and sugar maples can warn each other about insect attacks: Intact, undamaged trees near ones that are infested with hungry bugs begin pumping out bug-repelling chemicals to ward off attack. They somehow know what their neighbors are experiencing, and react to it.
