The prizes are meant to encourage the writing and publishing of high-quality science books for all age groups. AAAS believes that, through good science books, this generation, and the next, will have a better understanding and appreciation of science. The prizes began in 2005 by looking back on decades of outstanding science books and honoring five authors and one illustrator for their significant and lasting contribution to children's and young adult science literature and illustration. Beginning in 2006, the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize began honoring recently published, individual science books. The prizes emphasize the importance of good science books and encourage children and young adults to turn to science books, not only for information, but for enjoyment too! The School Library Media Specialist: Information Access & Delivery The teacher librarian sustains a healthy collection through an effective maintenance program. I hate to throw things away. How do I know when something should be pitched? The collection must be examined periodically to determine what materials need to be repaired, replaced, or removed. You also need policies that help you in the reconsideration process. What is weeding? Weeding or deselection is selection in reverse. For example, the book on the left titled Space Flight: The Coming Exploration of the Universe by Lester Del Rey (1959) was found in the science section of the library. Purging is officially withdrawing an item from the collection. A policy is an important part of the weeding process. What happened to "The Wizard of Oz"? Weed now or weed later? The answer to this question is WEED NOW! How do you deal with guilt over tossing materials? Weeding involves guilt. With changing needs in the curriculum and limited space for expansion, you don't have a choice. What should be weeded?

Ages 7-11 Neetu and Sanjay, sister and brother, have two grandfathers – one nearby in England, Grandpa Leicester, who is very particular about how his grandchildren should behave; and Grandpa Chatterji whom they have never met until he comes from India to visit them. He couldn’t be more different to Grandpa Leicester, and much to the children’s surprise, even he is drawn under Grandpa Chatterji’s spell, despite himself. Grandpa Chatterji, in fact, possesses many qualities which make him an admirable role model for the children. Grandpa Chatterji (shortlisted for the Smarties Prize) and Grandpa’s Indian Summer were first published in the early ’90s. Gavin writes with great affection for her characters (even scary Grandpa Leicester is not so bad) and even characters who only appear in a brief cameo role are deftly brought to life.
