Voice of Youth Advocates Founded in 1978, Voice of Youth Advocates, or (VOYA), magazine is the leading library journal dedicated to the needs of young adult librarians, the advocacy of young adults, and the promotion of young adult literature and reading. Regular columns by highly-respected young adult library leaders and several feature articles appear in each issue to provide information, not only on books and reading, but also on young adult library programming, gaming, professional development, intellectual freedom, young adult author interviews and profiles, and other topics vital to librarians serving young adults. VOYA was one of the earliest and remains one of the strongest advocates for intellectual freedom and equal access to information for teens. Selection Tools - Collection Development - LibGuides at West Virginia Library Commission There are many sources that assist in selecting books. Among these are book reviews, “best of” and recommended title lists, and annotated bibliographies. · Book Reviews Even though only a small fraction of books published are actually reviewed, the book review is one of the most important selection tools. Basic Selection Tools: 21st-Century Style, School Library Monthly, 2011-Dec Selecting materials for school libraries has always been a challenging task, but it has become much more complicated in the 21st Century. A school librarian at a junior high in the late 1990s could allot a certain portion of her budget for reference books, the general circulating collection, a few audiovisual materials, and newspapers and magazines. The budget of the '90s had the funds needed to support these areas. However, this is not the scenario that school librarians experience today. Selecting materials for the school library is a complex process, and one that school librarians need to plan and develop. School librarians must strive to understand the balance of the collection and the informational needs of the students.

Tools, Publications & Resources Selection & Reconsideration Policy Toolkit for Public, School, & Academic Libraries For library professionals to make informed choices, selection policies for all types of libraries — public libraries, academic libraries, technical school libraries, and school libraries (public and private) — should include criteria to guide in the resource selection process. The criteria should be a blend of general, specific, and technical to enable library staff to select materials in all subject areas and formats. In addition to criteria such as appropriateness to the age and level of the user, librarians must also consider creating a collection that reflects diversity of ideas and authors as well as being reflective of the population the library serves.

A Process for Selecting Materials Materials Selection and the Collection Development Policy As with all collection development processes, materials selection is governed by the library's collection development policy. If you have not already learned about collection development policies please complete Course 1 in this series: Writing a Collection Development Policy before going on with this course
