small is cool - StumbleUpon if you choose to live on your own as a young person (and i say this assuming that you don’t earn major bucks or perhaps you live in an expensive city – or both) you will probably be faced with the reality of renting a studio apartment. unless you’re an investment banker, or you won the lotto, or your granddad left you a sweet inner city pad the size of an ark that he bought back in 1950 for R500, or you’ve found some 3 bedroom palace with wooden floors and a working fireplace that’s being rented out for tuppence. if you’re one of those people, please don’t pity me. for i might be jumping on the studio flat bandwagon one of these days, and of course in lieu of that, the first thing i consider is HOW TO DECORATE. zach motl lives in a 178 ft² studio apartment in brooklyn. that’s 16m² folks… he’s an interior decorator, which explains why his flat looks the way it does. “the more stuff you put in a room, the bigger it seems” this NYC couple‘s apartment is only 200 ft² (18 m²!!!)

Plants for Pathways These are the most forgiving Woolly thyme likes to stretch its flat branches out over sidewalks and stairs. It is useful in softening the lines described by hardscaping materials like brick and concrete. Ornamental thymes (Thymus spp. and cvs.) are probably one of the most forgiving groups of plants when it comes to foot traffic. Like other thymes, woolly thyme is fairly easy to care for. Less is the New More: Making the Most of Small Spaces : TreeHugger - StumbleUpon Good Design For Living in Small ApartmentsAs people migrate to smaller spaces, good design helps a lot. This is something they figured out in Europe long ago, that if you don't have a lot of horizontal room you can go vertical. Tumidei in Italy makes some of the nicest stuff, like this unit with lots of storage under the bed. This unit just raises the floor high enough for beds to slide under. This one looks a bit clinical, but has two single beds plus a pull-out double bed in between. None of this stuff is cheap, nor, as far as I can tell is it available in North America, but there are ideas here that demonstrate how people can share a space and still get a little privacy, a good place to work and a lot of storage in a very small envelope. Located in Asheville, North Carolina, the 3,400 square foot Push House features a mainstream design with some very different systems behind its walls. The home’s use of hempcrete was only the start — for this application, hemp hurds are mixed with lime and water on-site and poured in-between the exterior supporting studs in lifts. It is the core to a breathable wall system — Hemcrete is actually less like concrete and more like infill straw bale, as it is non-structural. The insulating quality is r-2.5 per inch, and it has the unique ability to capture airborne pollutants over time — it absorbs carbon when it is grown and in place.

Gardening Tips - 7 Habits of Successful Gardeners - The Daily Green Originally published January 2009 Or is it the Seven Pillars of Horticultural Wisdom? As everyone's resolutions remind us, we love attaching a number to advice, a number smaller than the one I regard as most realistic: The Twenty Three Thousand Four Hundred and Sixty-Two Things It's Important to Remember Before Getting Out of Bed. So be warned: I haven't really honed it down to only seven; these are just the first seven essentials that came to mind when I decided to do this. And not in order, either. Short version: Mother Nature never throws anything away. Longer version: Composting is the rare silk purse from sow's ear, something for nothing, win-win. It's easy to fall into thinking that compost's last name is bin, and that careful layering and turning are part of the deal. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Got seeds? 7.

Garden House by David Guerra Email David Guerra is the Brazilian architect that redesigned the Garden House, a 1980′s house located in Brazil. This amazing house was constructed considering some important aspects like the interior/exterior integration which was planned to be bigger. This was possible using the garden day by day and it not only helped at the integration but also at the lighting of the rooms that used to be dark. To be suitable for the new owners the house was modernized adding new spaces that can be used in different ways. There was used a mix of styles including classics, ethnics, contemporaries and Brazilian references.
