David Crystal: In the last Lingua Franca I asked the question: Where have all the usage books come from? Well who is to blame? You have to understand the mindset of these people, for this would colour our entire way of thinking for over 200 years. Step one: left to themselves, people don't speak or write correctly. Step two: grammars and dictionaries are therefore needed in order to instruct society in the correct ways of speaking and writing. Step three: no-one is exempt. So there you are. And so people didn't. That is the point. But 'don't end a sentence with a preposition' isn't a rule in English.
