Speakaboos.com: stories, games, interactives and MORE! Good morning all, Heard about this great resource yesterday on Twitter from Patrick Higgins. It’s called and it’s a free literacy site with fantastic interactive stories, songs, games, printables and more. I love the intuitive UI (user interface to all you non-geeks), which makes the site suitable for individual use by even the youngest students in a center or at home. Here’s the basic movie interface (the mainstay of the site): Simple. If you have an interactive white board (IWB), the flash activities are great to get the kids out of their seats and get their squeaky fingers* onto the board: The “You might also like” feature is a handy addition that makes it easy to locate similar / related activities. The service is free, but they do offer a “plus” version ($4.99/month or $49.99/year) that offers among other things the ability to access the site’s content across a variety of mobile devices including iPads, iPods and smart phones. Hope this helps, -kj-

Good morning all, I first blogged about BBC Bitesize way back in May of 2009. Since then, BBC Learning‘s commitment to education as only increased, and it is evident by the substantial growth and development of this site. As I mention in my blog post above, if you are outside the UK, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with Key Stage terminology, the system used by the UK’s state educational administration to classify students (like K-12 here in the USA). Since my last visit, this site has added significant depth and breadth, while maintaining the quality of its graphics and the simplicity of its interface. Simple, intuitive, clean, no ads – what more could you ask for? Remember, this is the Key Stage 1 (KS1) section, for learners aged 5 to 7. I like the that the selectable levels of difficulty start with “Medium”. Granted, this is a simple point and click affair, but at the “Really hard” level, things get a little more interesting: Hope this helps, -kj-

Deep Thoughts: Body Hi! Here are three deep thoughts for your morning. They’re all about body image and no, I’m not writing this because I’m writing you from the poolside of Hotel Pellicano and I am trying to pep talk myself into taking my first dip of the year. Nope, that’s not at all the reason. Deep thought #1 : a fit body has become the ultimate fashion accessory. Deep thought #2: Having the dream body after 15 years old (ok, maybe 25)(ok, we’ll say 30), is a lot of work. Yep, and that’s the reason a lot of women with the “perfect body” try to make us think they do nothing to have their perfect bodies (I scarf down burgers! Okay.Deep thought #3: so then, a real cool girl’s body is not “perfect.” There you go. PS: The sublime Erica in the photo definitely has a dream body – I’d love to have a body like that one day, just to see what it felt like – and this photo is what inspired my 3 super deep thoughts. Okay, water, here I come! Erica’s bra top and shirt are from Pink Clouds.

smsteacher - seasonpuzzle I have a puzzle piece outline that I've used for two projects already. I have four groups of first graders, but it would work to just divide one class into four groups. We had a discussion about the seasons. The entire collage was created with a theme of peace. Beyond Drawing: Creative Colored Pencil Art & Sculpture From a very first look at these wonderfully detailed colored pencil sculptures by Jennifer Maestre, it should come as no surprise that her artwork was initially inspired by spiny sea urchins – beautiful be dangerous to the touch. For each sculpture, Jennifer hacks apart hundreds of colored pencils, cores them perpendicular to their length and turns them into beads, essentially, which she then meticulously stitches back together and slowly shapes into solid sculptures. Though her beginnings were with creatures of the water, Jennifer quickly expanded her subject matter to cover other organic objects – from plants and flowers to house pets and more abstract animals. While some of her work has a planned form from the very beginning, other pieces morph and shift as they take shape into something completely unplanned but nonetheless compelling.

Sticker Art by Kids | Coolart This is What Happens When You Give Thousands of Stickers to Thousands of Kids.. Over the course of two weeks, the museum’s (Queensland Gallery of Modern Art) smallest visitors were given thousands upon thousands of colored dot stickers and were invited to collaborate in the transformation of the space, turning the house into a vibrantly mottled explosion of color.
