50 Incredible Photos Of Animals From 2011 A mother like no other Lisha, a Labrador, is world famous for her mothering skills even though she’s never birthed any pups of her own. The dog, who lives at Oudtshoorn’s Cango Wildlife Ranch in South Africa, has played surrogate mom to more than 30 animals, including cheetah and tiger cubs, potbelly pigs, a porcupine, a pygmy hippo, a weasel and a barn owl. Rob Hall, director of the wildlife refuge, says that Lisha domesticates the wild animals and serves as a bridge between them and humans. Hall and his wife, Nadine, said they noticed early on that regardless of the whether Lisha encountered a kitten or a baby hippo, she treated them all the same — like a child that needed a mother. Cicero Psychologist Michael Tomasello, who delivered the 2008 Tanner Lectures in Human Values last week on campus, speaks at a discussion session Oct. 30. Drop something in front of a 2-year-old, and she's likely to pick it up for you. They all may be cute gestures by a child otherwise preoccupied with toilet training. "From when they first begin to walk and talk and become truly cultural beings, young human children are naturally cooperative and helpful in many—though obviously not all—situations," Tomasello said during one of two lectures about the origins of human cooperation. Tomasello, co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, delivered the 2008 Tanner Lectures in Human Values on Oct. 29 and 30, each of which was followed by lengthy discussion sessions. They have an almost reflexive desire to help, inform and share. Apes, on the other hand, are in it for themselves.

Conserving Africa's Wildlife Through Photography How often do we see exquisite imagery of animals that isn't a "When Animals Attack" special? Photographer Nick Brandt says, "The emphasis has generally been on capturing the drama of wild animals IN ACTION, on capturing that dramatic single moment, as opposed to simply animals in the state of being." I agree with Brandt and appreciate his stunning contributions to wildlife photography. The native Londoner first discovered the beauty of Africa's majestic creatures sprawled out on the breathtakingly unaltered landscapes in 1995, when he was still making music videos, practicing his formal training in film. But artist Gabor Fulop hasn't used marble or paper-marche to create this piece of artwork called 'The Lady Bug' - and has in fact made up his model using 20,000 tiny ladybirds. Using artificial resin, the Bulgarian sculptor handmade the minuscule beetles, before painting them individually. The Lady Bug Sculpture: Hungarian artist Fulop Gabor used 20,000 hand-painted ladybirds to create this model of the female form He then applied the Ladybirds - 20,000 in total - to a model of the female form. He said: 'The work Ladybug resembles a goddess of nature, a fusion of both human and animal organisms, that is both a unique being and a mass of creatures that took a human form.
