Crater Lake - Wood Installation by 24° Studio Inspiring Installation A winner at the 2011 Shitsurai Art International Competition, Crater Lake is an environmental installation that serves as a meeting place to visit with friends, contemplate the surroundings, or simply sit for a moment. The design was inspired by the social revitalization of the city of Kobe, Japan after the Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake of 1995. Multiple ideas and materials were tested to realize the complexity of the smooth and undulating form. Standard wood and off-the-shelf hardware were used in construction to avoid any costly customized fabrication process. 2×4 studs were used for all structural members and 30×60 mm treated cedar wood was used for the surface. The Chromatic Typewriter Washington-based painter Tyree Callahan modified a 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter, replacing the letters and keys with color pads and hued labels to create a functional “painting” device called the Chromatic Typewriter. Callahan submitted the beautiful typewriter as part of the 2012 West Prize competition, an annual art prize that’s determined by popular vote. I don’t know how practical painting an image with a color typewriter is, but if Keira Rathbone can do it… (via dark silence in suburbia)

Less is the New More: Making the Most of Small Spaces Good Design For Living in Small ApartmentsAs people migrate to smaller spaces, good design helps a lot. This is something they figured out in Europe long ago, that if you don't have a lot of horizontal room you can go vertical. Tumidei in Italy makes some of the nicest stuff, like this unit with lots of storage under the bed. This unit just raises the floor high enough for beds to slide under. This one looks a bit clinical, but has two single beds plus a pull-out double bed in between. None of this stuff is cheap, nor, as far as I can tell is it available in North America, but there are ideas here that demonstrate how people can share a space and still get a little privacy, a good place to work and a lot of storage in a very small envelope. To Be Nature Wood Chopstick by Gyeongwan Koo (Oliver) Chopstick Gardens The “To Be Nature Wood Chopstick” has a convoluted name but presents an interesting contribution to the “grow from waste” ethos that’s so popular these days. It starts life in your hands just like an ordinary set of chopsticks except it’s tipped with a starch cap hiding a seed. Recyclebank Get closer to nature by living in an underground home built from sustainable materials I’ve always wanted to live in an underground dwelling because it’s the closest I’ll ever get to living like a Hobbit, and it seems like the perfect place to go in case zombies attack. Most importantly, underground homes are very eco-friendly and are built directly into the earth, which means they take up less construction material and produce less waste. Here are 4 underground homes that get my “thumbs up” for being truly green and innovative: 1. This earthen home designed by KWK Promes has a grass roof that absorbs water and helps to regulate temperature inside the home. 2. Designed by Dutch architecture firm SeaRCH and Christian Müller Architects, this beautiful underground home located in a Swiss village has rooms that wrap around an interior courtyard, and they all get flooded with natural light. 3. Our solution is Aquaduct, pedal powered vehicle that transports water and filters it while in motion. One of the wonderful things about being recycle-minded is that every piece of trash is an opportunity to recreate something wonderful. At least, that’s the way I felt when I saw testaments to the miracle of recycling — houses, cisterns, furniture, bus stops and even entire schools — made from recycled PET plastic bottles. Eco-tec, an award-winning Honduran company, has used recycled PET plastic bottles for construction of houses, water tanks, and even schools. Using some 8,000 PET recycled bottles, Eco-Tec created the “casa ecológica” or ecological house, as a means of providing sustainable construction methods and employment in Honduras. "Domestic waste can be transformed into useful stuff.
