The Ten Best Horror Movies You Haven’t Seen

October means Halloween, and Halloween means horror, and horror? Well that means some damn good movies. I presume many of you are searching for a good horror flick to curl up with this month, and while I will advise you to first consult my 10 Best Horror Films of Decade list, I thought I’d compile a new one made up of films that aren’t quite as widely known. Yes, I love The Ring, The Orphanage and The Descent, but there are smaller, more niche movies that are deserving of your attention, and really, once you’ve been scared or grossed out once, it’s not quite the same if you watch the same film again. Here are some new titles that some of you may have seen, but I predict most of you will have not. 10. If you’re not in love with Amber Heard yet, watch Drive Angry, Zombieland or better yet, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. It’s a fairly straightforward slasher film, but with a few clever twists thrown in, it stands out over similar films. 9. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Bonus: Tucker and Dale vs.

Animated Films for Grown-Ups by Matthew Baldwin As a child I had a Mickey Mouse alarm clock. As an adolescent I graduated to a Mickey Mouse wristwatch. In high school I wore a black satin jacket with Walt’s signature rodent on the back. I guess you could say I was a fan. But not of Mickey Mouse, per se. My interest might have petered out as I moved on to college, but 1989 marked the beginning of the so-called Disney Renaissance. But by 1995 my enthusiasm was on the wane. It’s too bad, because I picked exactly the wrong moment to drop out of the scene. Half a decade later I walked into a theater, for reasons I cannot recall, to see Princess Mononoke. The subtext of Princess Mononoke is one of environmental protectionism—the same theme that Pocahantas wore on its sleeve. But I’m back now, and that’s what’s important. Animal Farm (1954) On Netflix streaming? Fantastic Planet (1973) Given the Gilliamesque animation and crazy-far-out setting in the trailer, you’d never guess that this movie won the 1973 Cannes Special Jury Prize. Not sold?

The Best and Worst Time Travel Movies From hot tubs to DeLoreans Looking for a good time It's not just the best thing to happen to movie titles since Snakes on a Plane; the new comedy Hot Tub Time Machine (opening Friday, March 26) is also the latest in a long line of time travel movies, stretching back from at least the 1940s into (we presume) the distant future. The new film depicts a group of friends who are transported back to 1986 from the present day, thanks to their special hot tub. Of course, such films are not always successful. The best time travel movies The rules are simple: Where movies have Metascores, they must be listed in order from highest to lowest. The worst of the bunch If we really did have a time machine, we'd use it to travel back in time and warn everyone to avoid the films on our next list: the worst time travel movies Hollywood has created so far. But wait, there's more Which time travel films didn't make the cut for best or worst? What do you think?
